PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

OK,OK, Stil having a problem with a remote printer being disabled every morning.
1) cleaning lady is not unplugging printer(I taped it to the wall)
2) Router and switches are clear of unwanted config info.
3) No duplicate IP address found anywhere.

This same problem occured this morning.
I did however make a change in jetadmin.
I enabled the 'Ethertalk' option. Problem is I have no idea what I enabled. Can someone shine some light on this 'Ethertalk' option. Could this have been my problem? I noticed some of my other printers have this option enabled.

Thanks,
Bob

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

Hi

Ethertalk is just a protocol use dfor ethernet.

On is probably a bad idea.

Most likely you have something like a powersave setting on the printer and when it is idle for a longtime at night the mode
powersave starts and the printer gets disabled.

If so turn of powersave on printer.

Use hpnpadmin from the same dir as jetadmin to look at printer settings.

If MANPATH points to the jd man pages there is a good manpage.

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

ETHERTALK is used by AppleTalk to talk to the printer. If you have no Macs on your network then you don't need it.

I presume your printer power outlet is not connected to a
wall plug which is switched off by the light switch.

When the printer disappears from the network what does the printer say on its display/leds? Is it offline?

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

Sometimes a network printer can disable itself when a cancel request is sent while there is no paper in the printer. If tis is the case with yours I believe there is a patch to resolve this. Did you tried removing the printer totally from the spooler and reconfigure it again ? For some unknown reason it sometimes help. And enabling the "ethertalk" setting should not be the caause of your problem.

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

If you are using Web Jet admin, then make sure you have the latest firmware for your Jetdirect card (or box).

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

Use the hpnpadmin command steve referenced, and see if you have an invalid bootp or dhcp referece setup for the printer.

Re: PRINTER PROBLEM,STILL

Thanks for the rabbit pelt (10 points) but until your problem is solved it's a bad idea to give out more than 7 points. Giving out 8-10 points causes the rabbit to appear which most people take as a sign that the problem is solved and they will stop reading and posting suggestions. IF you did solve your problem, what was it?
