Can someone answer the following.

If printers are created on a UNIX level, and then changes are made to them, does this mean that the scheduler needs to be restarted.

If it is only IP address, then leave it, or any make/model/driver change you need to restart the spooler

The HP-UX printing subsystem is SysV and changes such as adding, deleting or modifying print queues will require stopping the spooler (lpshut). When this happens, all current jobs will be restarted from the begining. If the printer uses an HP JetDirect card, you can edit the base printer script in the interface directory to change the IP address, but that's about it. All other changes require lpshut/lpsched.

Peter,

It depends on what you have modified and the type of printer. If it is HP printer and you used jetdirect to configure and you manually change the interface file, you do not need to recycle the scheduler. If the change is not ok, the printer would not just print.

If it is BSD or local parallel printer, since the interface does not have the ipaddress and other things you can change without going trough command line you may have to recycle the scheduler. ( you may have to delete and recreate)

If you adjust the printer itself not the driver and the printer is the same and IP address the same, you do not have to recycle the scheduler.

Let us know if you have a particular scenario in question.

For the most part - yes.

Example - in order to say delete a printer - the spooler has to stop.
