Printing port not working

Hi,
I am using a Hp 9000 system(712/80) But the onboard Parallel port is not working & daily I have to to take some printouts of an application(Includes Text & graphs), with some space limitation in the system. Now I am planning to replace the m/b But meanwhile can I xfer the printing jobs to some other place (On another n/w m/c) & restored it back after changing the m/b.

You mean change the spooling configuration to print on a remote printer?
Yes, you should be able to do that.

The easy way is to configure the printer on a other server.
And configure a remote printer on the system with the broken port.

depending on the other server you must make sure that remote printing is alowed.

yes
right mouse button on the printer (in windows) an click the saring options.

after you share the printer you can ad the printer as a remote printer (using the ip of the windows server) and the share name.

Do you have a Windows driver for that printer? Have you installed Print Services for UNIX?

Also "lpstat -t" giving a warning that "waiting for queue to be enabled on 'hostname of the windows'" after a long time.

Just follow the Help & Support info when searching for "unix printing":
Go to Network Connections.
Under Advanced Menu, select Optional Networking Components
Then check: Other Network File and Print Services

That's probably because you don't have the service enabled.

r u able to connect to 192.65.67.80 even? I doubt as it reports "timed out". If u can reach IP then try t figure out why 515 is blocked.

Oldschool:I have added a remote printer in HP-Ux m/c,
In windows the printer name & the sharename of the printer are set same:lprem,
Started the TCP services for unix printing are started, added the windows component "printer services for Unix"
Added the LPR port for that printer,
During that "Name or Address of server prioviding LPD:"tried both m/c name
&
"Name of printer or print queue on that server:"on both m/c the printer name is lprem,
selected both port LPT1 & LPR By using "Enable printer pooling"
But still facing the problem,

Thanks all, now I am able to take the printouts, the problem was with the firewall, I have disable the firewall from windows & the problem is solved now
But there are some Escape characters in Unix file (report of an application)which are also printing
So pls help me to format the printing as required by removing the escape chars.

Just escape chars by themselves or sequences of chars?
tr(1) can be used to remove single escape chars.

What is the format of the report? Is it PCL or Postscript. If it is PCL (also known as ASCII with extras) and has escape sequences, they are very likely require to properly print the report on a specific model of printer. These will be quite difficult to clean up because an "escape sequence" is the ESC character followed by one to several characters. You can delete the ESC character with tr but the extra characters will be left in the report.

What is creating this report? Do you have the option to tell the creator to change printer models? Or turn off all special codes? There are hundreds of printers and most are not completely compatible with each other. To see the special characters, run the print file though cat -v.

There are lots of escape characters, as the report is in PCL format, I know these esc chars are required to print the report in pproper format But in my case as the LPT port is not working I am using the same printer on windows & by using the remote printer on HPUX I am trying to take printouts

I am using Hp2500c deskjet Printer, this is not a network printer, But I am using it as a remote printer,

This is a very important detail. The DeskJet 2500c is an old (by printer standards) inkjet and does support PCL codes (escape sequences). But it is very important to know that there are several versions of PCL so unless your report writer knows about the 2500c, many of those codes will just print as random text.

Removing these codes is almost impossible with a script. The reason is that PCL escape sequences can be 2 characters or they can be 10 or 20 characters or more. It depends on what the codes are trying to do with the target printer. If your report writer was designed for a LaserJet 5si, then most of the codes are unknown to the simple 2500c.

The only solution is to rewrite the program so it does not insert any printer-specific codes, or upgrade the program so it is compatible with the printer.

Dear Bill Hassell,
In every report/ printout the escape cahracters are same, so I have removed these cahracters by using a script running in background(By using tr & sed)
Now I am able to take the printouts without these cahrs but in a single font & type. But how Can I again edit the file to do the formatting of some Text(Bold & big size headings)in a file & take the same printout, on the same printer connected as a remote printer on a windows PC.
The formatting includes Font size, Bold, Underline etc..

To format your document the way you want requires a Windows program for as MS Word. You can insert the correct escape sequences using vi but it is very tedious. Here are the two manuals you will need:

Yes, they are very long manuals and there are hundreds of codes to control the fonts, their size and spacing. I am going to guess that the program which creates these reports was never designed to work with this printer. HP-UX does not have tools for page formatting and more important, does not have a common printing meta-language and drivers for each type of printer. Unix-geeks will point out programs like nroff can provide some page formatting but not in the same class as MS Word or other PC programs.
