Printing problem with a very large file from hpux 11.11 server.

I have the following printing problem when I send a very large file to a print server:

While printing, the printer hangs and the job stays spooling on the server. I have to restart the scheduler in order to restart printing.

Unix Server: L-Class.
OS: hpux 11.11.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you might have.

Could you be a bit more precise. What is the print server? Just how large is very large? Are they remote printer queues or directly attached?

Re: Printing problem with a very large file from hpux 11.11 server.

Start by checking for full filesystems, especially /var/spool, though others could give problems too.

And make sure that there is no printer-filter running when stopping the scheduler, since it could very well be that it just takes a lot of time to do the filtering, depending on the file you print. For instance, printing a large PostScript file on a non-PostScript printer using ghostscript can take a long time to process.
Every problem has at least one solution. Only some solutions are harder to find.

Re: Printing problem with a very large file from hpux 11.11 server.

More Information:

Print Server:
HP Jetdirect 500X - 3 ports.
Firmware: J.08.02

Printers:
Line printer and HP LaserJet 9000.

The printer prints between 100 and 300 pages before it stalls but the print job stays on the server..

The total number of pages in the file is around: 10000 pages.

There is plenty of filesystem space.

Hi,

These type problems commonly track back to a network comm problem. Are you using JetAdmin or HPPI or whatever they call it now?
You might try watching port 9000 status via netstat or try sniffing on the subnet the printer lives. You might find the trouble there.

I would try contacting the printer team.

JetAdmin/JetDirect engineers are available in live chat at http://instantsupport.hp.com --> Active Chat
