problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

Hi,
After installing two Gigabit Ethernet cards (A4929) on our N-Class server, an ioscan -fnC lan does not detect the card. I've also installed the driver from the cdrom set, rebuilt kernel and rebooted, but it still does not see the cards. Is there anything I should check or force so the system detects them? Thanks. BTW, all the card's leds are on. TIA.

You may have to use the command
" insf -e -v"

See man page of insf.

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

Hi

Do you know what hardware address the card is on ? if so

ioscan -fnH

If the system can't see the card from an ioscan i would say your problem lies with the harware itself.

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

Did you install the correct software/driver. It need "gelan" driver. Can you provide the output of "ioscan -fn" here. BTW you should also take a look at the doc below to make sure you're installing it right.

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

And Hi yourself:

You've either not seeded the cards properly or have bad cards. Simple. There is nothing else.

Plug-in cards on an N4000 have to SNAP into place in order to seed correctly. You just can line them up in the slots and assume that because the screws fit and everything's aligned that they're in. They still have to SNAP into place and this takes a little more strength that you may realize. Perhaps you're worrying about damaging the motherboard if you exert too much strength. Don't fear, just press harder or call an HP CE, that's their job.

Also, some slots on the N4000 motherboard don't work with gigabyte cards. Refer to the document Steven has posted above and in particular the fourth bullet item under Step 1 which specifies "twin turbo" PCI slots. Twin turbo slots are clearly inscribed with an Italic, oversized and Capital 'T', which is used for both the words Twin and Turbo. See my attachment for an example of what to look for on your N4000. This example is from an A500.

Also, an HP CE would never have left you like this since they are unable to leave without the cards being visible in ioscan. This is HP's test for determining HW or SW problems.

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

Two additional words of advice, those grey plastic dividers are not removable. They are in place as separators. They guide your aim into the right slot, pull out maybe a half an inch and unclamp the slot, and then should be pressed back into place to tighten the clamp when done.

Also, you need the dedicated PCI bus provided by the Twin Turbo, which is the difference with the non twin turbos. The non-twin slots share a pci bus.

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

Thanks for your invaluable help, I think Frederik is right. I didn't get to that "snap" he's talking about...I'm using a Turbo pci slot, that's for sure, but I'll try to verify that I can "feel" the "snap".

Re: problem installing Gigabit Ethernet on N-Class

hi, finally i got it! i had to (very) slightly bend the far end of the metallic plate of the card so it slides on the rail perfectly and softly. I also got a wound in my fingers trying to extract the card from where it was inserted... beware the sharp edges of the almighty N-class :-) !!!
