Problem installing HPux on BL860c blade.
Greetings,
I have a BL860 blade in a c3000 enclosure. The enclosure does not have an internal DVD. I do have an HP external DVD USB drive. I get the same error when installing this way via the USB connected DVD drive as well as with Vmedia.
Basically, the 11.31 (march/08) media install starts and gets to the point where it loads the ram disk and then hangs. If I use an 11.23 (december/07) disk it gets beyond this point but comes up with a banner saying that "No more output will be displayed, this is a serial console". And then hangs. If I connect a monitor to the VGA port on the dongle I don't get any output, so apparantly the console is not being redirected to the vga port.
This is very frustrating and I dont know where to go from here. The blades have had the firmware upgraded on them not too long ago.
Thanks for any help!
John

Re: Problem installing HPux on BL860c blade.
John,
I think the problem is with the console input/output/error settings. We need to get into EFI and change them.
From your ITRC post it looks like you need to do the following:
Get into the EFI boot manager.
Select "Boot Option Maintenance Menu"
Then, select "Select Active Console Output Devices",
You're given a set of options to set, I typically use Acpi(PNP0501,00000000,40000000)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100+) for a serial connection.
If you want to use the VGA, i believe you need to clear the serial connection, and then set it to Acpi(PNP0501,00000000,40000000)/Uart(9600 N81)/VenMsg(PcAnsi).
Save settings fo NVRAM, and then repeat for input and error devices.
this _should_ take care of your problem. The installation appears to hang simply because you no longer see the console

Re: Problem installing HPux on BL860c blade.
Shalom,
I'd try the following:
Newer 11.31 install media.
Get the firmware checked and upgraded on the blade. You can probably do that yourself.
Since you already upgraded the firmware, maybe you installed a buggy release and need another new one.
Disks and cd-roms that connect to USB are generally not supported on HP-UX servers.

Re: Problem installing HPux on BL860c blade.
Check the console setting, example from EFI:
fs0:\diags\ODE> conconfig
CONSOLE CONFIGURATION
Index Primary Type Device Path
----- ------- ----- ----------
1 P Serial Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|2)
2 S VGA Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(4|0)
also check

and

Hope this helps!
