Re: Problem then of install "hpvm_guest_depot.11iv2.sd"

1) I am assuming IVM 3.5 as you have dynamic mem config. Assumin the IVM guest software is also 3.5.

2) why not try 1GB for the min on dynamic ram config, 512 may just not be enough.

Has this guest ever been up and running ( before the guest depot you just loaded ? )

Note: I see you are dedicating 2 physical processors to this guest. I guess it is ok, but my comment is, "Why have IVM then, purpose of VM is to share ?" (I am just curious as to why ).

The above would also effect how many VMGuest you can have, without knowing your VMHost config and how many other guests are running I cannot tell if this is causing an issue. e.g. 8 CPU host, 5 guests all with 2vCPU with 100% entitlement ( I would think in this case the guest would fail to start at all vs a panic)

Re: Problem then of install "hpvm_guest_depot.11iv2.sd"

Yes, I'm using IVM 3.5 on Host and Guest.
I try with 1GB, but the problem is the same.
The guest has running before the load depot.
The host server has 12 core processors...

That was my only idea, sorry.

I reviewed my VGuest boot logs and have listed it below.

One last thought, Up to date on patches ?? Next suggestion would be to place a call to HP.

Re: Problem then of install "hpvm_guest_depot.11iv2.sd"

binit() is doing a non-blocking kernel allocation for 64Kb at a time up to dbc_min_pct * your memory [Minimum buffer cache buffers].. poking around the path in question and looking at patches, I don't think it likely that there's a problem in the code per se -- nor do I seriously expect that the kernel just ate 17Gb before this point.

Which makes me think that the dynamic memory part of HPVM is somehow coming into play here. (I don't know all the details of this feature, but that strikes me as the new factor).

Since dbc_min_pct defaults to 5% (if you know that you set it, fine... apply that factor instead) -- what you need to satisfy binit() is around 870.05Mb (17401Mb * .05). So -- can you try increasing the minimum memory of the IVM Guest in question to 1Gb over what you've already set? (Not 1Gb total but 1.5Gb to 2Gb?) If this is an odd interaction with the Guest hitting the minimum while still doing non-blocking boot up allocations, that may work around things by ensuring that enough memory is there to get the whole system up and running. Then you can pursue with your support contacts why the Guest memory didn't get adjusted in this case. If this doesn't work we'll have to look further, obviously.

Shalom,

I would stop increasing memory and do a more extensive patch check, host and guest.

Go to a support call then -- everything I can think of next would involve using the console debugger, and that's way too involved to try to walk you through. Support will be able to coordinate resources and/or do additional debugging for you.

Re: Problem then of install "hpvm_guest_depot.11iv2.sd"

FYI
the response from call center:
I looked through the hpvmcollect info and the various things they have tried. In particular, they are using dynamic memory. To summarize, I believe the problem is that ram_dyn_target_start is set too small. For the guest for which I have the info, this is set to 2G, but the total size is 17G. In the configuration guide (section 9.6.3.4) it cautions against setting this value too low because it could lead to hangs or crashes while booting. The guideline is not to reduce more than 75% from the allocated size. Using this guideline, the ram_dyn_target_start should probably be 4.25G at a minimum, a little more would be better.
I'd recommend changing this value to see if it resolves the problem.

From the log that I can see (I don't have the config file), the other guest suffers from the same issue - the start looks to be 2G, but that guest (vmoracle) has an allocated size of 32G, so it is even more out of line (start value should be at least 8G)
