Problem with mirorred system disk ( not bootable)

Hello,
I have two problem, my mirror system disk is not bootable, and partially mirrored.
this was found after changing some disk on a SAN and running this :
/sbin/lvlnboot -v vg00
Boot Definitions for Volume Group /dev/vg00:
Physical Volumes belonging in Root Volume Group:
/dev/dsk/c2t0d0 (0/1/1/0.0.0) -- Boot Disk
/dev/dsk/c2t1d0 (0/1/1/0.1.0)

vgdisplay -v vg00
LV Name /dev/vg00/lvol8
LV Status available/syncd
LV Size (Mbytes) 4600
Current LE 575
Allocated PE 575
Used PV 1

LV Name /dev/vg00/lvo
LV Status available/syncd
LV Size (Mbytes) 4000
Current LE 500
Allocated PE 500
Used PV 1

My config :
HP-UX 11.11
LVM.LVM-MIRROR-RUN B.11.11
PHCO_30698.LVM-MIRROR-RUN 1.0
Now what I want to do is (after some research on this forum)

pvcreate -B /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0 ( don't know if it erase current config )
vgextend /dev/vg00 /dev/dsk/c2t1d0
mkboot -l /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0
mkboot -a "hpux -lq /stand/vmunix" /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0
lvextend -m 1 lvol1 ... lvextend -m 1 lvolx
(in same order of pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c2t0d0)

Please may someone confirm me if it is ok.
Is it possible to run it while users are working ?
Feel free to comment. I'm afraid I'm missing something.
Best regards.

Re: Problem with mirorred system disk ( not bootable)

Hi:

Your 'lvlnboot -v' output clearly suggests that the second disk was incorrectly created, probably without a 'pvcreate -B'.

First, 'lvreduce' all the mirrored logical volumes on this disk.

Then, 'vgreduce' this physical disk from the volume group.

Now, follow the steps you outlined. Be sure to mirror every logical volume on the original disk onto the newly created one, in logical volume order.

When that's done, use 'lvlnboot -v' to verify and do:

# mkboot -a "hpux -lq" /dev/rdsk/cXtYdZ #...for original volume too...
# setboot -a [alternate_path]

Re: Problem with mirorred system disk ( not bootable)

Hi

In 11iv3, we could run "vgmodify -B" to make a PV a Bootable disk. No need to do all those exercise again...

Re: Problem with mirorred system disk ( not bootable)

Hello Ramesh,
Thank for informations.
Today I've just one customer in 11iV3, and I usualy let HP do these task, but a lack of soft support involved me in this problem.

I think the guy who installed the server missed the boot system disk and we discover the prob when the sys disk fail years later. I was too confident on HP engineer I'm less now ;) with great respect to them.

For those reading just run lvlnboot -v vg00 to verify if it's Ok.
Best regards,
Xavier
