problem with sftp

HI guyz,

When I do sftp to a system it gives an error

sftp username@servername....connecting and then it asks for the password and connection get closed. What could be the possible reason?

The configurations are as follows

Login name: champion
Directory: /volumes/champusers/champion Shell: /usr/bin/false
Never logged in.

Re: problem with sftp

It's because you have /usr/bin/false as the shell. You need either a normal shell or one designed specifically to support sftp, such as rssh or scponly.

Thnks,

But would only default shell will work or I'll have to give specific shell that you mentioned for sftp?

Re: problem with sftp

Any real shell (sh, ksh, etc.) will work, but it will also grant the user account shell access. The two specialized shells I mentioned are used to grant sftp or scp access without also granting shell access. Use whichever one meets your needs.
