Question regarding VPars

We are trying to setup a 2 vpars in a 2 way 8400 machine. We are able to create 2 partitions with one processor each using vparcreate . The first partition was created with

vparcreate -D /stand/vpdb -p parname -a cpu:1 -a cpu::10 -a mem:1024 -a io:0/0/0/2/0.6.0 -a io:0/0/0/2/0.6.0:boot -b /stand/vmunix -B auto

but when we try to give a

vparload -p parname

I am getting the following message in the log

"ERROR:CPU0:MON:Unable to boot parname:device
0/0/0/2/0.6.0.0.0.0.0 not owned by partition"

Anybody has any ideas why this is happening?

Re: Question regarding VPars

since you can't use this LBA in other partitions, try to add the whole LBA (0/0/0/2/0 maybe, look in ioscan) to this vpar with vparmodify command and try again.

Re: Question regarding VPars

Hi,

I'm not very confident about your command syntax ...

Alex is right about the lba. I don't know what you really want, but concerning cpu :

-a cpu:1 means add cpu with HW path 1, and I'm not sure you can find it on a RP8400
-a cpu::10 means 10 active cpUs
-a mem:1024 shouldn't work

and for the -io commands, you should only use lba pathes and give the full path only if you wand to add an attribute like "boot".

-B auto is the default, just like -b /stand/vmunix.

My last advise would be to use /opt/vaprmgr/bin/vparmgr to create your vpar, then have a look to the command generated using the "show command detail" button.

Best regards.

Re: Question regarding VPars

I guess you should've created it this way:

vparcreate -p ... -a io 0/0/0 (because the LBA is 0/0/0 - for upper pair of disks + dds/dvd and 1/0/0 for lower pair of internal disks) Can see more with "ioscan -fnCba".
Later you do the usual.

Re: Question regarding VPars

IMHO, with cpu you can't specify what particular cpu you intend to use, it picks from the pool. Anyway, this is a good article (from Marty Ponyatowski book) -

Re: Question regarding VPars

My apologize, cpu h/w path can be specified with single ":", while "::" go for bound/unbound and ":::" for min/max. So there is no h/w path 1 then.

Re: Question regarding VPars

Micheael,

Here is the attachments you requested

ioscan -fnkH 0/0/0/2/0.6.0.0.0.0.0

Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=======================================================================
disk 0 0/0/0/2/0.6.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE HP 18.2GST318404LC
/dev/dsk/c0t6d0 /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0

I am getting a

"vparstatus: Error: Virtual partition monitor not running"

message for the vparstatus -A and -e.

Alex,
I have added the whole lba in the vparcreate command. If you check the above syntax I have added io:0/0/0/2/0/0.6.0 . Is that what you mean?

Jean,
What should the syntax be regarding cpu and mem? I installed vparmgr but there is some problem in my xwindows setup. I am not able to export the display properly to any other machine. So it looks like I am stuck with command line for now.

Zeev ,
I will try with 0/0/0 as an assigned io.

Re: Question regarding VPars

Guys,

The problem is solved. The issue was I had assigned the DVD drive to the second VPar. And they both seem to be sharing the same LBA.

I am able to boot the first VPAR but now the system is panicking!! Anyway the glass is half full now.

Thanks for your help. Any other tips/links/pointers are welcome.
