questions about lp

Hi all.

I want to know if exists any kind of compression between hpux and jetdirect when printing a file.

I need to print huge files in a slow WAN.

What can I use (hw or sw) ?

Thanks.

Re: questions about lp

It is not compressing on the OS level or jetdirect level. You can look for compression on Router level. You can talk to your network administrator about this.

You can print with jet direct. The only problem is that it will be slow. I don't know which type of printer you are using, you can increase the idle timeout parameter of the printer, if you face any kind of problem.

Re: questions about lp

jetdirect would not have any compression options.

If you have a "server" that is on the same local LAN as the jetdirect, you could configure your print queue to shuffle the print job to another server.

My 2 cents

Re: questions about lp

Rodney, I've NT servers in the same lan, and I can print the file via LPR on NT spool, but where is the compression? or I must send the file compressed and then print it?

Re: questions about lp

You would have to do the compression between the servers. Their is no automatic way to do this.

I think you might have to write some small scripts to handle this.

good luck...
