quick question

I need to upgrade a R380 from 11.0 32 bit to 64 bit. I can't change the version yet. So I'm thinking do a make recovery tape with the -a option to get the full system for backup, then put the install cd in and boot from it. Is this right or is there a better way? I know 64 bit runs on the hardware, I'm in the process of getting the critical patches for it. Anything else I should do?

Re: quick question

Greta,

We can upgrade the version from 32 bit to 64. But it seems to take more time than a fresh installation. So, you are always safe if you
take a make_recovery tape and backup configuration of your box like map files, network configuration files etc., onto another server before actually installing the OS.

I also would make sure that the make_recovery tape works by

1) Listing the contents of it by

mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
tar tvf /dev/rmt/0m
and
2) Booting from the tape but without installation. Interact with ISL and stop there so that you can cancel the installation anytime. So, you will get a good feel of the tape.

If you can attach an external disk or a different box, you can even try igniting the box on external disk or on another box to make sure you have a clone of the OS in place.

The above steps are just precautionary measures to make sure that you have a good backout in place.

Once the above two tests are done, you can go ahead and reinstall your R-class with 64bit.

Re: quick question

Hi Greta:

A cold install from the Core OS CDROM, followed by the Application CD, DIAGNOSTICS, and General Patch Bundles is the most expedient, cleanest way to establish your system. I agree with your plan to make an Ignite 'make_tape_recovery' tape before you start as a fallback.

Don't forget to collect you configuration files and your 'vgexport' mapfiles onto a tape or a disk that you can easily get to them after the cold installation.

I would download the latest version of Ignite, and use it to make your before and after tapes.

Re: quick question

Also be aware that if you have any EISA adapters you won't be able to use them once at 11.0 64-bit. There won't be any drivers available for them.

Re: quick question

run getconf HW_32_64_CAPABLE and getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS just to verify the hw capability.

There is an upgrade guide at www.hp.com/go/hpux11

Re: quick question

Hi Greta,

to update your server to 64Bit HP-UX you must have PDC rev. 3840 or later
You can verify the PDC rev. in 2 ways:
- online: run info on a CPU when using the support tool manager (online diagnostics)
- during power up: interrupt boot process after system self test to enter PDC command mode or just monitor the console messages during bootup
