re-installing HP-UX on Model 712/100

I want to improve my Unix skills by attempting to re-install the O/S on the box described in the subject block. However looking at the case I realized there is no cd-rom.
Also I haven???t powered up the system yet and not sure what version is currently loaded. Can someone please advise what I need and is it possible to install a more current version?

Is there a tape drive connected to the system?

If yes, you can prepare the ignite recovery tape from other server and use it to install OS on this server. (Ignite is the recovery tool for HP-UX)

Also, just start the machine and login to check what version it is running.

Dan,

You can install 11i in 32 bit mode - see this page:

However, without a cd drive, it's going to be next to impossible, unless you can set up another system as an Ignite server and do an Ignite network recovery. You might want to look into a used cd drive.

No tape drive either.

Would you know if I can use any external cd-rom? Also you suggested using another server as an ignite server. Do you know of any links for that information?

Re: re-installing HP-UX on Model 712/100

Dan,

You need to find a CD drive that will connect to your 712 - which I'm not terribly familiar with but I would assume that it's probably just single ended SCSI. You could look around on E-Bay for HP external CD drives, perhaps.

Ignite and documentation about it are available here:
