Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

Hi Jason,

My message from the other thread.

Which CD did you use?. 11.0 should support chroot_lvmdisk utility. The problem is that we don't do it often so I do not remember the steps well. Here is the official document from HP to boot through install/recovery CD. Try it.

Go to IT resource center and click on search knowledge base. Select "search by doc.id" and type in OZBEKBRC00000582.

Try with another CD of different release.

There is one more method if you can move the root disk to another system. Then you can import the volume group there, mount only / file system on some temporary directory (/temp_dir) and edit /temp_dir/tcb/files/auth/r/root and delete the password entry.

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

How do I get it to load /usr/sbin/chroot manually. I have mounted the appropriate devices manually, but chroot isn't showing up?

(Bottom of Step 7 in article http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&admit=-682735245+1034193426129+28353475&docId=200000063236538)

Thanks for all the help/advice.

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

Hi Jason,

You mounted them manually? The chroot_lvmdisk should take care of it and it will load chroot also. Do an ls under /usr/sbin and see if it is there. Then use the full path.

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

I can't seem to get the knowledge base to find this article: OZBEKBRC00000582. Anyone else having problems with finding it?

Make sure you are searching by Doc ID instead of by keyword when you search in the TKB for this.

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

Nothing seems to be working. What if I booted to a different OS (ie Linux/Solaris) and tried to edit the /etc/passwd file. The box is a HP 9000. Just trying to figure out how I can get the password reset. Rebuilding the system would take ages.

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

Jason,
You havent said what kind of HP box you dealing with...
I know of 2 cases with HP boxes:
You have a series 800 (server -in which case booting in single user should be enough but I havent tested C2 trusted in such a situation yet)
You have a 700 series (workstations)
And here it can be more painfull if someone entered the secured passwd - I remember having to extract th boot disk first in order for it to reinitialise the boot sequence then puting back the disk and booting single user.
Im sure some other fellows out there remember better than me the subtility (5-6 years ago..)

Good luck

Re: RE: Root Password Lost (HP-UX) ... HELP!!!

Jason,

In fact, I tried to boot through install/recover CD on my workstation and I could be able to do whatever I wanted.

As I mentioned before, you have one more choice provided if you can take the root disk out and put it on another system. Let us know the following details.

1. What other HP systems do you have?. How many are running with 11.0.
2. What kind of root disk is this?. Internal or external?. Is is mirrored. If so, where is the mirror? internal or external?.

Based on the answers to the above, we can see if we can move the root disk, import it on another system, mount root logical volume and change the password.
