RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

I have RealVNC 3371 installed on my unix workstation running b11.11

im trying to see unix from my windows 2000 pc.

1. i can connect to windows pc from unix and see the w2k screen just fine.

2. i can connect from w2k to w2k just fine.

3. i cannot see unix on my w2k pc which is actually what i need to do.

4. i have chmod 777 all files in /opt/realvnc/bin
just to be sure i open it up.

5. i can ping unix from pc box, but obviously they see each other as i can get vncviewer to open a w2k screen on unix.

6. i get 'unable to connect to host:Connection refused (10061)'.

7. Seems like unix wont let windows connection in, what am i doing wrong? some port is closed on unix? how do i find out which port is connecting to which from w2k to unix?

Any help at thi spoint would really be welcome as i have been chasing my tail for the last 3 days now and really getting tired.

thanks

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

I guess the obvious questions is the vncserver running on the unix box? The default port is 5900, can you telnet to your port 'telnet srvrnam 5900'? The RealVNC website has some faqs, and there appears to be quite a few posts about connection refused. Check out their docs.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

Thanks Robert,

Appreciate the link. I am new to unix and when i telnet from unix to pc using that port it does not connect, or the other way, so i do believe its some sort of port issue.

This gives me something to go on, as i have reached blank stares point.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

ok, i checked the $HOME/.vnc/host:display#.log and this is what it says, what does this mean?

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

Tariq,

I'd start with this;
/home/user/.vnc/xstartup[11]: /opt/realvnc/bin/vncconfig: not found.

Where did VNC get installed? Because the xstartup script is looking in /opt/realvnc/bin for a vncconfig file. Could be a pathing problem.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

Hello Robert,

i think that may the issue as i cannot see vncconfig.

I installed VNC 3.3.7.1 from depot I found on ITRC, and it installed itself on /opt/realvnc/bin/vnc* except the vncconfig..? Would that not be part of the package in the depot?

I also have the binaries for vnc-4.0-hpux and I notice it has a vncconfig file in it. Is that something I could move and use, does'nt seem very clean to do it that way...confused?

I will try looking for another depot if I can find one and see if it comes with a vncconfig.

Thanks again.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

I downloaded a previous depot (3370) from this site and it too definitely does not have vncconfig, so thats very strange.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

Yeah, that is strange about the vncconfig, because this is straight from the man page:
"vncconfig is used to configure and control a running instance of Xvnc, or any other X server with the VNC extension. Note that it cannot be used to control VNC servers prior to version 4."
?????
Why don't you install the 4.0 version?
I have to fire up my Unix workstation and see what happens when I load VNC.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

ok, here is what i did today:

1. i tried the vncconnect option instead of vncconfig (could it be in this version its vncconecct?) anyway, it would hang up saying could not bring up display.

So i kept searching and found there is a 3.3.7.2 version by Chuck Slivkoff at
ftp://hprc.external.hp.com/PA/ for PARISC

and someone recomended patches for it( http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=804816 ).

So I uninstalled 3371, installled 3372, applied the patches, and used file manager GUI in unix to browse to /opt/realvnc/bin opened a terminal session in vncconnect - started the listening viewer on my windows PC, hit enter on unix, the w2k PC asked me for my password, I knew I had it then, and viola i got the screen.... yayyy! thanks so much robert for your help, you pointed me in teh right direction about the paths being incorrect and vncconfig.....

Anyway, i still have to test it using cmdline in unix as we would normally be using a telnet session to fire up a connection, but this is pretty good.

Re: RealVNC Xvnc reverse connection problem

Robert,

Thank you for your help. It is running beautifully today, been connecting using different displays, different PC's, W2k Servers, different HPUX B11.11 UNIX workstations/Servers, all work like a charm.

I will post instructions that I sent to some users in-house, it may save a newbie like me, some time in the future.

FIRST THING: DO NOT RUSH... Take your time to read this and other instructions as they will save you a lot of pain that I went through. Go slow and step by step....

To connect to a HPUX X-Terminal from a Windows 2000 PC, first....

Download free utilities from RealVNC at

http://www.realvnc.com/download.html

Download the UNIX depot from the link in the message above. Install using defaults, apply patches.

1. Install Windows realvnc using defaults. Once installed, start 'Run Listening Viewer', this service will run in your windows PC toolbar and will be used for connections.

2. Login to 'your_unix_box' as 'user' (Root cannot use VNC, but you can SU to root)

3. Type 'vncserver' (by default it starts a display session :1, which is the same is typing 'vncserver :1', you can start as many 'vnservers' as you like, e.g.
vncserver :2, vncserver :3, vncserver 13, vncserver :5000 etc etc) NOTE: The first time you type vcserver command, it will ask you to setup a password, this is different from your UNIX password. You can change this password anytime by typing 'vncpasswd' under your user $HOME dir.

4. Run the listening viewer on the PC side, double click to open it.

5. Type in the UNIX server/workstation 'ipaddress :1' (if using the default display value) or 'ipadress :3', or 'ipaddress :5000', etc, etc.

6. A password box opens up, type in the vnc password you setup earlier, and you should connect to the X-Terminal on Unix.

Good luck all.
