recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Hi,
on this trusted system the root account is disabled, and the passwd unknown.
Even in single user mode I have to enter the root password.
I booted from the recovery CD.
From the internal disk I can mount /stand (from /dev/dsk/c1t15d0s1lvm)
I can not mount / (from c1t15d0s2lvm)
It says unknown filesystem.
I would like to mount / so I could access /tcb/files/r/root

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

What version of HP-UX is this? Trusted on HP-UX means there is no recovering the root password if lost. your only option is to wipe out and restore from backups.

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Hi Robert-Jan,
I tried chroot_lvmdisk ;
It fails with the fsck check; complain about wrong superblock.
Mounting of this disk fails also: unknown filesystem.

The system boots normally. So I guess the filesystem is OK.

Met vriendelijke groet,
Donald

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Hi,
from 1.1.1.6 Exit to Shell; Activate and Repair a Root Volume Group:
You will see the following occur automatically.

`fsck -c 0 -y /dev/rdsk/c#t#d#lvm` will run against the boot disk.
The root file system will be mounted to /ROOT, and the stand file system to /ROOT/stand.
The fsck fails, and the root-fs can not be mounted.

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

These are nice docs.
However they do not describe the situation I am in. The system works fine,(multiuser and but I lost the root passwd. I am not able to mount the root partition while booted from the recoveryCD.

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

I know I was hoping it would give you a hint. This in not something I do on regular bases. If you have a contract, call the HP response center. They probably have more documented cases.

Robert-Jan

Ps chroot_lvmdisk is located on the cdrom, did you try a more recent(or older) media ?

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Donald,

Try mounting /dev/dsk/c1t15d0s3lvm

slice 2 is usually the SWAP/DUMP volume.

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Hi,
Joshua: in /dev/dsk only 1 and 2 exist.
Robert-Jan: I only tried from recovery CD (maybe I try later from an ignitetape)

Re: recovering trusted passwd from recoveryCD

Hi,
Somewhere I found a snip of paper with the root password on it.
So I do not find a real solution to the question.
