redundant ups

Hello all

We have a 24/7 configuration in which we put two hpux servers on two R6000 XR ups. I would like best practice or known working configurations with hpux on how to configure these two host to shutdown in the event of a extended power loss.

Basically each ups will have a connection to both servers through redundant power supplies.

Because both ups will be connected to both servers how in hpux software may we configure the shutdown of the server. Has anyone done this?

The standard ups_mond ups_conf files in /etc will do the trick.

The question you need to ask is does one power supply have enough juice to run both servers. If so, you don't want to shut down when the first one fails, you want to shut down when the second one fails.

If you lose building power make sure the config files above are set with a time and that /etc/inittab does not have the ups line commented.

Then your systems will shut down nicely when building power is cut.

This situation can be avoided with HP racks with UPS built in. That lets me cross connect my servers and provide power to all servers from both power supplies. Power supply failure gives me a warning, but the boxes don't go down unless both power supplies detect loss of building power. They are also snmp devices and can be integrated into toptools type setup.
