Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but here I go anyway :)
I have an Lclass 900 with HPUX11.0, two disks both in vg00 (yikes!!!) along with lots of other dodgy stuff. I am planning to reinstall OS and recreate vg etc.(yeah!) I have backups of my data and have found lots of other good stuff on the site about what to make copies of before I bite the bullet and wipe the system. So I am onto the reinstall planning now so here are my questions
I have an unlimited user licence OS cd part number # B3782-10475 and 4 application Software CD's part number #B3782-10463,4,5 and B3782-10472 Do I need codewords etc to reinstall some of this software. The system came preinstalled so I didnt have them to begin with. If so where do I get them? What are the best patch bundles to bring me up to speed but not to the bleeding edge. I will be installing Oracle 9 on this machine and
I have been wondering would it be better to upgrade to 11i? Any suggestions, recommendations, pointers and answers etc. greatly appreciated.

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

check for the /var/adm/sw/.codewords

Also check http://licensing.hp.com

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

You can copy the /var/adm/sw/.codewords file from the system before you start.

Codewords should be in

/var/adm/sw/.codewords

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

It really depends which applications you are using.

Glance requires a codeword

Mirror/ux requires a codeword.

As far as going to 11i, I'd say a bit more planning needs to happen before you pull the trigger on that.

Oracle 9 is certified on the platform but Oracle 9 release two works only on raw disk space. How you set the machine up is of great importance.

The quick answer is, if you have time to plan things out, check certification matrix and such, you are better off with 11i. Just do some planning.

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi,
if in doubt of forgetting something, do not scratch both the disks.

your vg00 consists of disks A and B.

lvremove and vgreduce vg00 leaving disk A free, so disk B will have the system installed.

Install your S.O. on disk A.
If you forgot something, import the disk B with another name (ex. vg00_old) and extract your stuff.
When all your app works, you detele vg00_old and do the mirror.

I would go to 11i for further support, along with latest quality pack, but Remember that with 11i your codeword won't run, you will have to re-obtain them fro HP.

HTH,
Massimo

Steven, could you give me some more info or point me to it on what way the machine should be set up for Oracle9 release2 as this is this is the driving reason for this reconfig there will be little else on this box aside from Oracle.

Thanks again

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Are you planning to re-install the same level of OS software? In this case, why not perform an Ignite Backup of the System, followed by an interactive Restore, where you can specify all the new configurations (increased lvol size, different vgs, etc). Or is the motivation for re-installing to remove the "dodgy stuff" from the system?

If you install 11i (not upgrade!), you will probably be going through the same steps as you would to install a "clean" 11.0 system again. So there is very little difference apart from a few things (codewords for 11i products, 32 vs 64 bit, etc)

WRT Patch Bundles (Gold Paks), I stay 1 release behind, and check for patches pulled by HP on the website before installing. I do include the most up-to-date SCSI, Fibre and stape patches I can find.

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi Babs,
Lclass box support 64 bit OS, so 11i is recommended!
I'm using 11.00 now in some Lclass boxes, and I received many 11i upgrade core OS CDs from HP. For some reason, I didn't make a upgrade for all these boxes.
Make /etc/ full backup will just make things better! A make_tape_recovery is also needed and helpful!

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi Massimo: vg00 two disks are not mirrored (I know how bad this is......now!!) so I have data spanning the two disks which is not good!!! So I dont know how wiping one and keeping the other would work?

Hi Ian: Yes partly motivated by wanting to rid the system of the dodgy stuff, stuff everywhere, two disks in vg00 etc. partly because we had Oracle 8.1.6 on the system now trying unsuccesfully to install and run Oracle 9.2 so wipe and rebuild sould be a sensible option now. I have backed up pretty much the whole system data wise so hopefully they will work. Will Oracle 9.2 be ok if I stay at 11.0??

Thanks again

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hey Babs,

How big are your disks? Do you have any free space on Disk A? If so, is enough to accomodate the data from Disk B? If so, you do a pvmove I beleive and get all of the data off of disk B to disk A and then mirror them. That way you would be protected as Massimo suggested.

Hope this helps!

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Babs,

Have just checked my SAP [p-tooe!] Upgrade Doco, and they support Oracle 9.2 on HP-UX 11.0 (which Oracle must also support, I suppose).

Personally, I would take the hit and upgrade to 11i if you have the time / media. It's stable and supported, and saves performing the same actions as an 11.0 install again!

Best of Luck! Ian

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi Brian:
I have two 18gb scsi disks but I only have about 1gb left on the system thats not allocated to any lvol I have more free space within these lvol but I am pretty confident about my backup data etc. so I think I will bite the bullet.

Hi Ian:
Thanks for the info :) I may have to stay with 11.0 for the moment( I do as I am told!!) but thanks for that advice, maybe next time!!!

Thanks for all the help as usual on the ball and prompt :)

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi,
since you are going to keep the disk only for recovering data, see if there is unimportant information, like extra swap.

Oracle usually needs lots of swap, but you not :)

Or, at least, not on a disk to be scrathed !

Oracle binaries, also, are scratchable, since you are going to re-install it.

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hi again,
tried to find this /var/adm/sw/.codewords file
by running #find / name .codeowrds -print
got back a big fat nothing?
Where can this file be???

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Swap the "o" and the "w" on the 'find' command?

ll /var/adm/sw |grep code

should show it. Ian

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

hi,
it is also possible, since sw was pre-installed, that they used unlocked source to install the software, and now you have not that file.

Check the spelling, as suggested....

Do you have the papers ?

Re: Reinstall OS, software codewords etc.

Hello!

Try to search in the files word "code"
in the /var/adm/sw/

Or could be that you never enter password
to make install.

The other issue is that better for today is
install the 64bit OS if it's will be 11.00 or 11i depend what you preferd.
