I have a server with 146gb internals. When vg00 was created, it was created with PE size and max PE per PV such that it won't support the 300gb drives we want to use to replace the 146gb drives. I would just replace one drive, mirror to the 300gb drive, and then do the same for the remaining 146gb drive, but I think I will end up with 146gb drives and the other half will be wasted. My other option is to just pull both drives, install the 300gb drives and restore from an ignite image, but can I change the PE size and Max PE at that time? Is there a way to accomplish this? Is vgmodify safe?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Brett:
You can take an Ignite 'make_tape_recovery' backup and reinstall to your larger drives.
Chose the "Media Only" then "Advanced Installation" mode of Ignite. On the "Filesystems" tab you will find you can set the 'pe_size' to accomodate using the whole disk. Size your logical volumes according to your needs, too.
You will need to rebuild your mirrors following the Ignite session.
If you are running 11.23 or later, 'vgmodify' could be used too. This will require you to be in LVM maintenance mode. A very good whitepaper describing the use of this tool is:

Re: Replace internal vg00 drives with larger drives.
Yes, like Jim says you can do this. But personally, I'd back up my system and take this as a golden opportunity to build my O/S fresh and new & cleanup any old footprints.
Then put back the files I need from my backup.
To me it's like an opportunity to clean up the garbage without having to take out the trash.
Just a thought,
Rgrds,
Rita
