Restart Server Periodicly

Dear All,

Do we have to restart server periodicly for refreshing memory from unknown process or zombie process?
Do you have doc or white paper that explain about this.

Many thanks in advance

Re: Restart Server Periodicly

I would say no. Also zombies don't take up memory.

You could leak shared memory by incorrectly killing applications but using "ipcs -m" may allow you to clean them up.

What did you mean by "unknown process"?

Dear Maya,

Normally this question is raised by the people who come from the windows background. Most of us already had been asked the same question by many of our colleagues before.

The subject was discussed in detail by senior forum members already. Please see the link.

Re: Restart Server Periodicly

Hi Maya,

Instead of restarting the server "for refreshing memory from unknow process", you may wish to simply restat the application process. In fact, properly patched HP-UX is extremely stable and can run for years without a reboot. It is always bad application programs that are the culprit but even these can be fixed by restarting the apps, not rebooting. The ONLY reason to reboot is to perform kernel patches, perhaps 2-3 times each year.

hope this helps!

kind regards
