root account disabled

Hi every body...

I have a problem with my machine this is a HP 9000 Model E35 with HP-UX 10.20 and with one ADP conected to the console.

I tried to enter with root account but I disabled it because too many failed logins; then I turn on the console but it doesn't work with my machine.

I change all configurations for the console but it doensn't work with my machine (it works with others HP machines).

Then I can't login with root but I can login with my user...

Question:

Can I emulate a console using for example xterm or other application?

(I tried with xterm -C but it doesn't work because I'm not /dev/console owner)

Thank in advance...

Christian.

Re: root account disabled

I guest what you could do is to a single boot mode.

The procedure to use is:

Reboot the machine.

Watch at the console for it to prompt 'To dicsontinue, press any key within 10 seconds'

At that point hit the space bar.

At the 'Main Menu: Enter Command >' prompt type 'bo pri' and hit return

When asked 'Interact with IPL (Y,N,Q)?>' enter Y

At the 'ISL>' prompt type in 'hpux -is'

Once you in mount other filesystem and activate the password.

Re: root account disabled

To do malay's solution, you need a console connected to the box.

That isn't something you can simulate. If you have a web console, which is a hardware add on that ships with newer boxes, that would work too.

Direct answer to your question:

Can I emulate a console using for example xterm or other application?

No, not that I know of.

ps give malay a 10 points or at least a few, I'd like to see a hat on his head.

Re: root account disabled

hi,

u have to reboot the server . while system starts the PDC sets the console path there is no root comes into picture so u might get ur console screen.
while booting its purely a rs-232 communication takes place.so i hope it should work without any problems.unless ur console is working properly.

u can boot thru single user mode and u can enable the root access.

Hi Christian,
Just a thought ...
If you are able to log in as your own ID, can u "su" to root ?.. of course even for that you will need correct password of root.

Re: root account disabled

Christian,

If you are having a problem with the console but have a PC or laptop running Windows, you can connect the serial port to server and configure Hyperterminal to receive and display the console output.

If you know the root password, you can attempt to login as root. If you do not, you can reboot the server and bring it up into singke user mode. From there you should be able to reset the password.

Cheers,

Joseph.

Re: root account disabled

Thanks...

I'm in trouble yet.

My console isn't working then I don't know how to establish communication with my box. I think that could be the card on my box the real problem.

Then I don't have console (because the card), I don't have another user with root permissions, I don't have another host on my /.rhost, my system is trusted and I have a problem. :)

I try using an ENTRIA but it doesn't work as console; someone had work, using ENTRIA or ENVIZEX as console (using net).

Thanks in advance.

PD. I tried using hpterm -C but the system says that my IP isn't in the list.

Re: root account disabled

You have a number of configuration errors so there is no simple solution. The hpterm -C option will work fine ut only when you fix your DNS/hosts configuration problems, and of course, the ENTRIA terminal is useless during a reboot since hpterm won't run without HP-UX. Your E35 requires a working console port and of course, the correct wiring. The MUX card acts as the console port and the cable from the MUX to your console must be a crossover (null modem) cable. You can get an adapter at any PC store to make a straight-thru modem cable into a crossover cable. Are you using an HP terminal (700/92, 2392A, etc) as the console? A dumb terminal will work OK when set to 9600 baud, 8bits, no parity and software handshake (XON/XOFF).

Many terminals require additional signals to work correctly so getting a non-HP terminal working may require pins 4,5,8,20 jumpered together at the 25pin terminal connector.

And certainly possible that the MUX board has failed so it may need to be replaced.
