root password

Hello all,

is there anyway to change the root password of a trusted system without rebooting the server. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: root password

If you lst root's password, you would do this ..

# cd /tcb/files/auth/r/
vi root
Remove the characters in this field, ie FROM

:u_pwd=FjkcRtoBTdXnI:
to

:u_pwd=:

Save the file and use the passwd command to change the passwd.

Re: root password

I would only use the method /tcb file method mentioned in the link an in S.K.'s post if you don't know what the old password was. Otherwise the straight forward passwd command. I've used the /tcb method quite a number of times, but you have to be very careful!
