rp stands for Route Processor type.

rp can be on PA-RISC and IPF platforms too.

The naming for a rack-optimized Itanium server would rx (where x stands for Itanium.)

Hi,

"r" stands for "rack-optimized" and not "risc processor". In fact, here's the naming convention for the rest of the rack-optimized series:
rc - rack-optimized ia-32 server
rp - rack-optimized pa-risc server
rx - rack-optimized ia-64 server

R. Sri Ram Kishore got it right. Also in the numbering scheme rpX4XX, the 4 also indicates pa-risc, which is redundant, and in the rxX6XX, the 6 indicates Itanium. This is useful in double checking the numbers that often get confusing.
