Software for creating movie/animation files from an X window

We use some CAD software (I-DEAS from UGS) and it has the ability to make assembly animations. Unfortunately, the ability to output these animations as a file (.mov, .wma, etc) only exists on the Windows version of the sofware.

We recently had to hire a professional videographer to film the screen of a workstation doing an animation for use in a customer presentation.

Is there any software out there (free or not) that would allow us to create a movie file by capturing, for instance, the current active window?

Mark,

Take a look at http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~bsd/vncrecording.html

Seem to do everything you need. Let us know how you get on.

I haven't played with capturing animations as movie files on HP-UX. You can try your luck at HP-UX porting site.

Look at X11 - softwares.

The VNC solution looks promising. I'll look into it.

Unfortunately, the SPAC didn't have anything that looked feasible. I looked there before I came here. There were a couple of MPEG players and a couple of MPEG libraries, but no MPEG creators.
