rsh to HP-UX box on Win XP-SP2 with Firewall active : takes a very long time
We want to run a rsh to a HP-UX box fom a Windows XP machine with SP2.
When the Windows Firewall is active, it is not possible to do a rsh-command, the command never completes, and you don't see an error.
When the Windows Firewall is STOPPED, the rsh-command completes and does its work.
Is there someone who knows wich ports I need to open on the Windows Firewall to make it work ? I want to activate the Windows Firewall with an exception for the rsh-command.
Thanks for giving me your input,
Greetings,
Chris MARREEL

Re: rsh to HP-UX box on Win XP-SP2 with Firewall active : takes a very long time
You have to open all ports related with r* commmands like rlogin, remsh, rexec and rcp.
Ports are 512, 513 and 514.

ivan

Re: rsh to HP-UX box on Win XP-SP2 with Firewall active : takes a very long time
That was not the solution.
I have searched a bit further and the answer was pretty obvious : in the windows firewall you can add a 'program', and now I have added "%systemRoo%\system32\rsh.exe", and from now on it works with the windows Firewall active.
Thanks for your input,
Greetings,

Re: rsh to HP-UX box on Win XP-SP2 with Firewall active : takes a very long time
The windows firewall is designed to stop protocols that transmit data and authentication in clear text.
rsh qualifies. Since its not secure and other tools can do the job securely not much effort has gone into this area.
Try secure shell.
