SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi all,

i tried to use a SDLT drive on my HP-UX 10.20 machine, but everytime i try to use the backup and recovery buton within the sam area i get the error message "SAM internal error. The error handler has gotten the error code 1 of type NOTE with the associated strings: 10/0/15/1.4.0 QUANTUM SuperDLT1" .
Since now i could not do any backup operation with this tape drive. I tried to install some tape patches, but the problem remained. By seacrh through the web i found some links onto patch PHCO_23876, but its only valid for HP-UX 11.00. Maybe the corresponding patch for HP-UX 10.20 would solve the problem. Within the /usr/sam/lib/C/pd_devinfo.tx file no entry for SDLT drives is available. I hope some of you has an idea. Thanks in advance.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi Gian,

You need the 10.20 SAM cumulative patch - PHCO_22268.
Here's the link:

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi,

The SDLT error in SAM can be resolved by applying the patch - PHCO_22268 ( Cumulative SAM/ObAM Patch).

Download it from the ITRC. That may solve your problem.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

thanks. This solved my problem, i could perform a backup with the sam utility program fbackup right now, without havin the error message. But now i have another problem. By using frecover it is not possible to recover the files back with the following message:
Starting file recovery...
frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5418): not an fbackup volume; unable to read volume header
frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5412): Do you wish to try to salvage this volume? [yes no]

It seems that the installation of further patches is needed, maybe frecover and fbackup patches. Some further ideas?

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi,

Check this document. This says about a support issue and the same error, check the part number of the DLT drive:

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

the tape is rewinde automatically, i use a device file of type /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST, so it should rewind. interestingly by working with the tar command no problems appear, so i can write onto the tape by tar cvf /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST file
and recover it by tar tvf /dev/rmt/c0t4d0BEST.

Further i installed the frecover and fbackup patches PHCO_23861 fackup(1M)/frecover(1M) cumulative patch, but it did not help.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

Shiju, i checked the document and it really seems very similar. The seller of the tape driver has verified it for HP-UX, so i think it should work, but by the way how can i check the part number?
Thanks!

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi,

For checking part number:

1) Physically check the drive. If you have the order/delivery details, check that.
2) ioscan -fnC tape
3) run STM and find out the drive details

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Ok, i thought you meant an internal drive numer or so. Of course i have the serial number of the drive. I should contact the seller for more information. Thanks again for your help.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi, install all this patches.
Also fbackup fails, you must tune: fbackup_config

Best regards
Rainer

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

Rainer, thank you for your tip, i tried to install the corresponding s_700 patches instead of you s_800 patches, as i am using a C3600. But unfortunately, there are a lot of patch dependencies to take into account. so i will first have to install a bundle of relevant patches.

As i could find out, this is a general problem with SDLT tapes as frecover expects a smaller file size as the tape drive is uisng, so we get an i/o error. I hope to fix the problem during the day after installing the new patch bundle.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

well now i installed all patches as proposed, but nothing changed. The problem is the same

Starting file recovery...
frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5418): not an fbackup volume; unable to read volume header
frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5412): Do you wish to try to salvage this volume? [yes no]

That is the list of Patches i installed throughout the last two days:

PHKL_16750
PHKL_16959
PHKL_17857
PHSS_19576
PHKL_19721
PHKL_20610
PHKL_21594
PHKL_21660
PHKL_22157
PHCO_22268
PHNE_22506
PHKL_22854
PHKL_23258
PHKL_23418
PHCO_23861
PHKL_17655
PHCO_23844
PHCO_23437

Has anyone a further idea? Or some further patches that may help?

Thanks in advance.

Re: SAM Internal Error when trying SDLT tape

Hi again,

so this will be my last message on this topic, after discussing my problem extensively with HP support it seems that the SDLT drive we are using is not supported and at this time not usable with HP-UX. The problem is disussed in the message i got from HP Support printed below of my message. So if someone wants to use a SDLT drive by the fbackup/frecover command at the present state, think about it!

Gian Antonio

Bruce L. -- HPUX WTEC / Commands and Libraries:

"SuperDLT1 will not allow a write() of less than 4 bytes. frecover(1M)
senses EOF by trying to write() 1 bytes, and if the write() returns 0, then
this means that we were at EOF. Customer has talked to Quantum about this
issue, and they are looking into it."

"Here's a simple test, using dd(1), which shows the issue. The first tape
drive /dev/rmt/8m is an Ultrium-1, the second is the SuperDLT1:

lpc7066:/>dd if=/dev/rmt/8m of=/dev/null bs=1 count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
lpc7066:/>dd if=/dev/rmt/10m of=/dev/null bs=1 count=1
dd read error: I/O error
0+0 records in
0+0 records out"
