samba 2.2.3, w2k clients : pb with PDF

Hello,
I have a very strange trouble with pdf files stored on a samba 2.2.3 HP-UX server.
From a w2k client, I can copy the file locally, open it with acrobat : no pb,
If I try to open directly trough the share, then it does'nt work.
Nothing bad in log files, change log level to 5 : nothing bad.
From a winnt or Linux (through smb access), it works !!! I didn't try with win95/98.
I tried with another share samba 2.0.7, the problem is the same...
Another strange thing. The problem doesn't happen for every pdf files, some of them can be opened !!!
I would be happy if someone would have get such a trouble !! Or at least give me an url for searchable samba mailing list.

Hi Benoit,

Could you post your smb.conf and indicate which share it's on. Also do you have any issues opening any other kind of files, eg Excel spreadsheets or Word docs?

There are Samba mailing lists at http://www.samba.org

Darren.

Here is the smb.conf file, all the shares are concerned !
I will try again to find a search button somewhere on samba site !!!

Re: samba 2.2.3, w2k clients : pb with PDF

Hi Benoit,

Is there any pattern to the pdf files which cause problems? ie are they over a certain size or require a particular version of Acrobat?

Is the problem intermittent - or can you state that a particular file always causes a problem? If so, and it is small enough to add to a post it could prove useful.
I've tested a couple of pdf files here through CIFS A.01.08 (which is based on Samba 2.2.3a) to a Win2k client and had no problems. Acrobat version was 5.0

Re: samba 2.2.3, w2k clients : pb with PDF

Hi Daren,
I tried to compile on my own the 2.2.7 version, the 2.2.5 version, And I have always the same trouble with the binaries I built.
I tried with the binaries from samba.org (with and without windbind) same thing.
Finally I followed your advice with the HP's product (which is in fact the same one !!!)
And It works fine !!! The trouble is solved. And I wanted to use msdfs, and I 've seen in the doc that it's built in....
The question I have now is :
What are the compile options which were used, to build this product !
(If I want the latest release, or change storing area, it's better !).

Thanks very much for your help !
regards
Benoit

Re: samba 2.2.3, w2k clients : pb with PDF

Hi Benoit,

Glad to hear that you've solved the problem.

I understand why you want the flexibility to compile Samba yourself, but I don't know what options were used for the compilation of CIFS.

Please bear in mind that CIFS is HP adding value to Samba, so there may be extras in CIFS that you won't find if you just compile Samba yourself. An example of this is the CIFS UNIX extensions.

My only suggestion is to study the CIFS documentation (should be able to find it on http://docs.hp.com ) to see if that gives you any clues towards the options.

best regards,

Darren.

Hi Benoit,

I am trying to compile the Samba 2.2.5 and got a lot compiler issues and not moving forward esily. Do you have some special make file you use for making the new samba package that we could
borrow? Thanks.

Re: samba 2.2.3, w2k clients : pb with PDF

Hi Wayne,
I had an error at compilation time, with samba 2.2.5, but not on smdb, nmbd products, it's just on add-on products that I don't use !

Benoit
