I just found out about a product called
"Samba":
############################
# what /opt/samba/bin/smbd
/opt/samba/bin/smbd:
$Revision: 92453-07 linker linker crt0.o B.11.37 030623 $
HP CIFS Server: T.30.PV.02 based on Samba 3.0.5
############################
I have heard this product functions like
"NFS" for remote mounting? Just curious about
your experiences ( pros & cons ) with "Samba".
Thanks

Re: Samba product
I have no direct Samba experience being an NFS shop, but I can report from my Forums experience that there seem to be a lot of apparently happy Samba users out there.

There's a newer version out there - but this will work fine.

Re: Samba product
Samba 3.0.11 was just released earlier this year. You should check out the release notes and other documentation, and since it's open source you can download this latest version of Samba from ...
http://us4.samba.org/samba/
Also, there's been a lot of studies done on SAMBA. A good read is at:
http://irtfweb.ifa.hawaii.edu/~hawarden/networks/info/samba.html
Since Samba is open source you'll need to ensure you take proactive measures to secure it. There's information on trying to make Samba a little bit secure ... see the section heading, "Setting up Samba to make a partition writable to a select group"

Re: Samba product
I just set up a samba share today on a hp-ux machine so I could drag a bunch of windoze files over to it.
It doesn't require any extra software on my windoze box to use samba, UNLIKE NFS.
samba is FASTER than a windoze file share.
samba has GREAT logging capabilities, whereas NFS just sucks and has nothing to offer!
if an NFS mount goes away you are toast. If a samba share goes away you get an error message!
Those are my opinions and I'm sticking to them :-)
