smbstatus will tell you.

Eg:

test:/opt/samba/bin=> /opt/samba/bin/smbstatus

Samba version 2.0.6
Service uid gid pid machine
----------------------------------------------

No locked files

Share mode memory usage (bytes):
1048464(99%) free + 56(0%) used + 56(0%) overhead = 1048576(100%) total

Either use the smbstatus command on the machine and look for the string "Samba version x.x.x" in the output or connect to SWAT (if you've got it configured), look at the status page and the version is listed just below the "auto refresh" interval (about the 3rd item down).
