SAN Migration

Hi All,
I need to migrate data on a XP-512 to a new SAN box. I have a 2 node Service guard cluster running Oracle Parallel Server and this has got around 1.5 TB of data on the storage.
The VGs are in shared mode.
Currently there are 2 HBA's from each node and are connected directly to the >XP-512 with out a switch.
We have a minimal downtime.

Any suggestions would be appriaciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: SAN Migration

Shalom,

Don't totally trust the san migration tools.

Take a traditional backup to tapoe before you start.

If you have the port density and band width, you could mirror the logical volumes from one san or the other or use SAN mirror/copy control console to replicate data.

Re: SAN Migration

Hi,

1. Tape backup as suggested by SEP.

2. Try to add one more HBA to the 2nd node. Connect to the new SAN. Failover the package to the 2nd node, do LVM based mirroring.

3. use option 2, if your Max_PV param is rechead, do mount the new SAN disks with /NEW, use cp or cpio.

Best is option 1. But this require a downtime of backup and restore.

Re: SAN Migration

Mirroring for zero downtime (if you have room in the vg)...

Also can use vxdump/vxrestore.

Just create a new vg, then mount the new lvols to a temporay dir:

vxdump -0 -f - -s 1000000 -b 16 /oracle | (cd /zmnt/oracle ; vxrestore rf -)

where /zmnt is location of new lvols

Re: SAN Migration

We did just this a year ago. XP512 to EVA 5000.
In our shop we have 4 HBA's in each server going to the XP. Not a luxury you have.
It was a simple matter or giving two of the HBA to the EVA and copying data. This was really not a big deal and simple changes of the storage definitions in the cluster config.
Thus, as others have noted, having an additional HBA would make this a fairly simple task.
If you have a good relationship with the vendor providing the new SAN, or HP, I would ask for a loaner HBA or two until the migration is complete.

Best of luck on this.
