sar data not configured, directory/data files missing

I have a strange situation with some "new" boxes I support now. Apparently sar data isn't configured and there is no /var/adm/sa directory.

I was supposed to gather some data on this box from the weekend but now obviously I can't.

How do go about starting up the monitoring for sar? Other than creating the directory?

I feel kinda dumb asking this question, so bear with me.

Shalom,

A good sar script, though you may want to add a mkdir command to it:

Re: sar data not configured, directory/data files missing

Todd,

If you server in a Mission Critical OE, you should have OVPA (mwa) installed on the system, it will be a good performance tools to measure your system performance.

It will be much more easier right ?

Re: sar data not configured, directory/data files missing

maybe I wasn't clear...

I can't run any sar scripts because I have no /var/adm/sa directory and no data is being captured.

How do I ensure that it is?

Re: sar data not configured, directory/data files missing

Since the data collection directory does not exist explicitly specify an output file and location alongwith a sampling interval for data collection. To collect about 1000 samples of I/O activity every 30 seconds in a file use the command below:

# sar -d -o /tmp/iorpt.$(date +%d) 30 1000

Re: sar data not configured, directory/data files missing

I have seen this as well - on new 11.23 installs - the /var/adm/sa dir isn't created.

Don't know why - feature?

Yes, you have to:

mkdir /var/adm/sa

then setup cron...something like:

# SAR
0 * * * * /usr/lib/sa/sa1
10,20,30,40,50 5-19 * * * /usr/lib/sa/sa1
# reduce the sar data
5 19 * * * /usr/lib/sa/sa2 -s 5:00 -e 19:01 -i 600 -A
