SCSI scanner not recognized

An ioscan shows that a HP6200C scanner attached to a B2000 workstation is recognized as "disk", a Canon slide
scanner as "unknown". Consequently,
some software cannot access the scanners. What is wrong?

Is there any reference to the scanner under /dev. You would expect to see some device files for under this directory.

... yes, there is a scanner device, and
some software can even run the scanner.
But some other software (e.g., SANE)
gets confused.
