sendmail patch install failing, log error puzzling

I am trying to install the patch PHNE_34900 ( v11.00). The first attempt failed initially, error message in log:
ERROR: /usr/sbin/sendmail has been replaced by a softlink to another file. This may be due to a version of the "sendmail(1m) 81 special release upgrade" product being enabled on the system. PHNE cannot be installed until newer versions of sendmail are disabled.
I did realize I had an old version of the "sendmail.cf" in place, so I copied the /usr/newconfig/*" version over and retried the install. Same error though, thought I check in with the HP brain trust.
Do I just ned to turn Sendmail and install?

NOTE sendmail version is 8.11.1, "sendmail -bs" shows it twice.
