Sendmail

Hello,
After installing patch PHNE_29773 sendmail now doesn't work.

When I try to start it below is what I receive..
/sbin/init.d/sendmail start
newaliases: cannot open /etc/mail/aliases: Executable files not allowed
554 Warning: .cf version level (10) exceeds sendmail version 8.9.3 (PHNE_29773) functionality (8)

I have no idea how to resolve this issue. I've looked at permissions on /etc/aliases and that isn't an issue either.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
unix Guy.

Re: Sendmail

I know you checked permissions but humor me and post the output of "ll /etc/mail".

Check /etc/mail/aliases, not /etc/aliases

Re: Sendmail

Hi,

What is the version of sendmail installed in your system? It seems the patch installed is for sendmail version 8.9.3, while the sendmail installed in your system has a different version.

Did you try removing the patch?

Re: Sendmail

Hi Guy,

Check the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file for it's version level. It'll be the DZ value inside the file. It must match the sendmail binary ver level. Run what against /usr/sbin/sendmail to get it's ver level.
If they don't match then copy /usr/newconfig/etc/mail/sendmail.cf to/etc/mail if IT matches the binary version.
Remember to make any mods to it like domain & smart relay before restarting sendmail.

Jeff

Re: Sendmail

It would appear that this patch hammered the sendmail 8.9.3 sendmail.cf file.

It should not have and I'm wondering if you forced the installation when sd/ux objected.

Regardless, this is a pretty old version of sendmail and you might solve your problem in a number of ways.

* Remove the patch
swremove PHNE_29773
* Install a later version of sendmail

I'm not actually sure a new installation will be helpful. You may need to remove sendmail before installing the special release.

Re: Sendmail

I agree with Steven - back out patch, and install the Sendmail Special Release...You will have to edit the new sendmail.cf file to suit your environment....

Re: Sendmail

In sendmail 8.9 the sendmail.cf file functionality version should be 8 or less . But the sendmail.cf file is of version 10 which defined near the starting of the sendmail.cf file with the directive V .
Ur file will be like this
V10 , it should be V8 , but by simply changing the version no wont start sendmail working. Probably u had installed an older patch which replaced the newer version of sendmail which was capable of reading version 10 sendmail.cf files. Which is the OS verison ??
