Serial device - HP-UX 10.20

Hi,

I need to rename a device from /dev/tty0p0 to /dev/serial2. It is a serial device RS-232 that will be used in HP-VEE software. Can I use "ln tty0p0 serial2" in /dev ? HP-VEE just use serial device with these names serialX, where X is 1 to 9.

Cheers,
Mauro

Re: Serial device - HP-UX 10.20

Just use

cd /dev
mknod c 1 0x000000 serial2

BUT double check /dev/tty0p0 first for major minor numbers.

Re: Serial device - HP-UX 10.20

Hi Mauro,

Just use mknod to create a device file with the same major and minor no as tty0p0,

ll /dev/tty0p0

crw--w--w- 1 bin bin 193 0x000000 Aug 21 2001 /dev/tty0p0

check the major and minor nos, 193 and 0x000000 in this case,

create a new device file serial2,

mknod /dev/serial2 c 163 0x000000
chown bin:bin /dev/serial2

Hope this helps.

Hi,

As your question is "Can I use ln ..."
the answer is yes.
Since my days with Apollo machines where the
serial-lines were called sio1 and sio2 I have
always created links in /dev called sio1 and
sio2 pointing to the somewhat less descriptive
tty0p0 etc.
So in your case you might just as well do:

cd /dev
ln -s tty0p0 serial2

Re: Serial device - HP-UX 10.20

Hi Mauro:

Both suggestions will work. You can either create a link or create a new device file with mknod.
