serious help needed with IVM!
I just installed HP-UX 11.31 release 4 and decided to give IVM a try.
I have created a virtual machine using the following setup:
# hpvmstatus -V -P test

localnet 1 Up Shared N/A N/A
switch 5 Up Shared lan1 0x001cc4fc844c 10.1.10.50
First question here is, what is 10.1.10.50? That is the IP address of MY lan0 on the host box, I DO NOT want that address to be the IP address of that guest, right?
hpvmstart seems to be working just fine:

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
would like to learn few more things. The IVM is on rx2660 and this was ignited using an image of rx36XX.
Was that Ignite source a Golden image or a make_net_archive?

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
- this is the IP on the host, not the guest
2) you need to connect to the guest's console now (hpvmconsole).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
Second item:
>localnet 1 Up Shared N/A N/A
>switch 5 Up Shared lan1 0x001cc4fc844c >10.1.10.50
>question here is, what is 10.1.10.50? That >is the IP address of MY lan0 on the host >box, I DO NOT want that address to be the >IP address of that guest, right?
The output is showing you that you have a Virtual Switch that is assigned to lan5 on the host, and that the host has an IP address configured on it. This has NOTHING to do with whatever IP address you assign to the Virtual NIC in the VM that is "connected" into this vswitch.
Next item, define "and it hangs in there FOREVER". How long have you let it "hang"?
To be honest, I think using an exisiting physical server image is NOT a good idea, and recommend you take a read of the Vpars documents and White Papers, especially:

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
Did you double check to ensure there were no typos?
As Melvyn said that hpvmnet output is correct and would reflect the VMHost IP - but in your hpvmstatus -V output I don't see you assigned the client a host - so again - what's in your IUX /etc/bootptab file?

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
What happens when you do
# hpvmconsole -P test
-> select "co" for console
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

HPUX> boot vmunix

loading section 0
.......................................................... (complete)
loading section 1
............... (complete)
loading symbol table
loading System Directory (boot.sys) to MFS
....
loading MFSFILES directory (bootfs) to MFS
.x..................
Launching /stand/vmunix
SIZE: Text:29499K + Data:7288K + BSS:5260K = Total:42048K
Console is on Serial COM1
Booting kernel...
Then the booting kernel hangs, I assume thats because the kernel is NOT detecting any serial device or something like that?
I DONT see ANYTHING else besides that.

Printing EFI ConOut PATH in pretty format.
=> Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(3|0)/Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(115200 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100)
Printing EFI ConIn PATH in pretty format.
=> Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(3|0)/Acpi(PNP0501,0)/Uart(115200 N81)/VenMsg(Vt100)
does this mean that the console is getting set at 115200 BAUD ?
not too sure .... though!!!

Re: serious help needed with IVM!
But you you created a VMClient (using hpvmcreate).
What I'm thinking is you probably need to go back and load the O/S using either an IUX server and setting up the /etc/bootptab file and putting a "lanboot" option to load from in EFI. Or you could load your O/S from the DVD, or if you prefer iso file. These are fairly standard recommended methods for installing the O/S to a VMClient.
Why not try using one of these standard methods to load your O/S and see how that works, since the method of using that rx3600 image isn't.
Just a suggestion,
Rita
