Serviceguard configured with 802.1q VLAN trunking

Hello Again Big Guys:

Big points for this help. I have a project coming up in two weeks to add in 802.1q VLAN to Serviceguard.

1) Is 802.1q compatible with SG?
2) Doc.'s on the procedure?
3) Anybody who has done this before, can you share your procedure?

Thanks in Advance!

Re: Serviceguard configured with 802.1q VLAN trunking

I am not sure what you mean by adding 802.1q to ServiceGuard. VLAN's are usually done at a the switch/router level. If you want to trunk NIC's on the server you need to get HP's APA product. APA can work in a ServiceGuard environment. The documentation on HP's site is pretty good. Depending on your setup you may need your network guy to setup port aggregation on the switch side also. I am not sure if this is the answer you are looking for.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"

Re: Serviceguard configured with 802.1q VLAN trunking

Assuming here you are talking about actually extending your VLAN tagging into the HPUX server, rather than just implementing VLANs on the switch - then you are talking about setting up this software:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-0617/5991-0617.pdf

1) In general yes, but there are exceptions - care to mention versions of HPUX and Serviceguard, and whether you will also be using APA?

2) Considerations around VLANs are part of the standard Serviceguard documentation:

http://docs.hp.com/en/B3936-90117/ch03s05.html#d0e5001

3) Sorry - Haven't ever had to do it myself.

Note the links above were for 11iv2, if you're on different OS versions, I'm sure you can find the relevant equivalent docs on docs.hp.com

Re: Serviceguard configured with 802.1q VLAN trunking

In the past, I've made IP changes to the package control file. These were not vlan ip's. Adding in vlan ip's is an extra layer of complexity and I'm concerned about how they will compile.

Comments on this? This is my concern.

Re: Serviceguard configured with 802.1q VLAN trunking

VLAN support within Serviceguard is described on pages 110 and 111 in the current Managing Serviceguard manual at http://docs.hp.com/en/B3936-90135/B3936-90135.pdf
If the issue is not discussed in this document, then Serviceguard adheres to networking protocol supported by HP-UX.
