Re: Serviceguard support Active/Active model for 3 or 4 node cluster??

Please explain what you mean by active/active

If by active/active, you mean all nodes are allowed to operate Serviceguard packages, this is possible and recommended. You need not dedicate a server to a "standby" function in a Serviceguard configuration.

However if by "active/active" you mean that each node runs an instance of a particular application, and each is able to access the same data, this too may be possible using Cluster File System technology recently made available in Serviceguard version A.11.17

Please give more detail.

Re: Serviceguard support Active/Active model for 3 or 4 node cluster??

Many Thanks Mr. Stephen Doud.

My cluster (4 nodes) will run separate applications. They use same storage device (EVA 8000).

It 's possible, can you give me document "step by step install cluster 4 nodes".

Thanks and Best regards,
QV.

QV -- Here is the link to the managing ServiceGuard:

http://www.hp.com/hpbooks/prentice/ptr_0131013726.html

It's not really possible to give a generic "how to install" since you need to go through various steps including configuring hardware, software, etc.

Follow the guide in the link above and you should be fine.

Also, make sure that you increase the NODE_TIMEOUT from 2 seconds to 8 seconds to avoid failing over if your system gets busy for a short time.

Re: Serviceguard support Active/Active model for 3 or 4 node cluster??

Shalom QV,

The normal mode for SG is active-passive. Packages relocate when the primary node fails.

However Oracle RAC will work in an active-active mode with a SG cluster.

It depends on the applicaiton whether or not SG will work in an active-active mode.

Re: Serviceguard support Active/Active model for 3 or 4 node cluster??

This method is too inconvenient to explain how to create a 4 node cluster properly.
I suggest that you read this document:
UMCSGKBRC00010342
TITLE: Serviceguard cluster implementation summary

If you cannot open technical documents in the ITRC forum (you must associate a support contract with your user name by modifying your profile), use the 'Managing Serviceguard' manual as a guide to creating a cluster:

Re: Serviceguard support Active/Active model for 3 or 4 node cluster??

Using SG to run multiple applications spread across all the nodes in the cluster is supported and works very well. I was running 10 Oracle instances spread across all 4 nodes of a 4 node SG cluster. Each can have it's own failover rules etc.

Each application must have it's own discrete mountable volume or set of volumes so they can operate independant of the other applications.

As Doug says, you need to make adjustments for your own situation which the document link should provide.
