Husaini,

Sorry but cifs/samba is used to share filesystems and printers - it is not designed to share tape drives. If you want to share tape drives you're going to need some sort of backup software that supports that (such as HP Data Protector).

Of course now I read your question again, you don't actually want to share the tape drive do you? I'm guessing you want to mount the filesystems of your HP-UX box on your Windows system so you can back them up there (over the network).

Now that should be possible (maybe not so good from a security perspective or from an ease of restore perspective, but possible)

I'm afraid I'm no cifs/samba expert though so I'll leave that to others....

Duncan you are underselling youself...
Of course it is possible but it is a very bad idea. The setup is too convoluted, too many dependancies and too many places for something to go wrong and make restore impossible.

yes it can be done, however, I'd consider installing Services for Unix on the windows box and using NFS.

the next question I'd ask is "What software would use for backup?"

Most enterprise class products don't need to be configured this way.

Re: Share tape drive between windows server and HPUX server

Another more expensive option would be to put the tape on the SAN ( if you had one ).

Then share the unit over FC.

Then again sharing tape drives would require some backup manager software and more $$.

so... the one no cost solution would be to use SAMBA to share the disk. Then backup that share ( performance will probably be poor) but again performance was not a concern in your origional post.

I like OldSchool's suggestion. The only difference would be that I would install cygwin on the windows boxes that will be backed up. Here is a good link on the setup:

But going the cifs way should'nt be that bad either. You just need to mount the share on the linux server. ie,

mount -t cifs //server/share$ /mnt/mount_point -o username=domain_user_name_or_local_account_name

Argh. This is HPUX. Sorry, I thought I was in the Linux forum. I would just use cywgin and nfs.

Re: Share tape drive between windows server and HPUX server

Thanks all for the suggestion and solution. Thats mean, the best solution is to use backup manager software like HP Data Protector. Now my next question is how can i assign point to you guys?
