Sharing a DVD drive between Guests in IVM 4.2

Hi,
Just wanted to know if I can share a DVD drive across Guest machines in IVM. I have a Guest with DVD drive /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0 exported to Guest1. While the OS installation is in progress, I wish to present the same drive to another Guest but I am not able to do it. I even shared the drive.

"/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0,/dev/rdisk/disk5:CONFIG=gdev,EXIST=YES,DEVTYPE=DISK,SHARE=YES:Guest1,Guest2:HPVM_WWID_DEV_13_2"

But still I get errors.

hpvmmodify -P Guest2 -a dvd:scsi::disk:/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0
hpvmmodify: ERROR (Guest2): Duplicate backing device '/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0'.
hpvmmodify: ERROR (Guest2): Unable to add device '/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0'.
hpvmmodify: Unable to create device dvd:scsi::disk:/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0.
hpvmmodify: Unable to modify the guest.

Am I missing anything ?

Any help much appreciated.

Regards.

Re: Sharing a DVD drive between Guests in IVM 4.2

Maybe it is already assigned to this guest?

Hope this helps!

Yeah. That's what my query is. Having assigned the drive to 1 guest, I shared that drive with attribute SHARE=YES and then tried to assign it to other guest when I encountered that error. Just wondering if it works.

I mean it is probably already assigned to Guest2:

hpvmmodify -P Guest2 -a dvd:scsi::disk:/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0
hpvmmodify: ERROR (Guest2): Duplicate backing device '/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0'.

Hope this helps!

Shalom,

Try this procedure to clean up disks. Then allocate the disk as a gdev so it can be shared.

DVD drives are accessed by one Virtual Machine at a time.
To use it on a second VM, you must first de-allocate it from the current VM

So, DVD cannot be shared at a time across the guest.
