Size of File system (/opt/oracle) should be extended

Hi friends,
One of my file system got 100% utilized:
/dev/vg00/lvol9 16777216 16740329 36887 100% /opt/oracle

and I need to extend this file system size.

I have 1275 free PEs of 4 MB each.
what will be steps to do it?
is there any problem if i unmount this file system, because its volume group is vg00 & filesystem /opt/oracle.

I need your suggestions,

Stop oracle (if you don't have online JFS

umount /opt/oracle
lvextend -L 20000 /dev/vg00/lvol9
extendfs -F vxfs /dev/vg00/rlvol9
mount /opt/oracle

restart oracle

Once again, you should check the man pages. This time the EXAMPLES section of lvextend contains the information you need:

"Unmount the file system.

umount /dev/vg06/lvol3

Extend the file system to occupy the entire (larger) logical volume.

extendfs /dev/vg06/rlvol3

Remount the file system.

mount /dev/vg06/lvol3 /mnt"

In your case, you would obviously substitue /dev/vg00/lvol9 in place of /dev/vg06/lvol3 and /opt/oracle for /mnt. If you have problems unmounting, you might want to reboot in single user mode.

Sorry, I missed the first step of lvextending the LV:

"Increase the size of a file system existing on a logical volume.

First, increase the size of the logical volume.

lvextend -L 400 /dev/vg06/lvol3"

If its a mountpoint under /opt should be no problem to umount.

So first :

umount /opt/oracle


Use lvextend -l / -L to
increase number of extents (each of 4MB usually) or (with -L) number of MBs.

Like:

lvextend -L 400 /dev/vg00/lvol9

makes this volume to be 400 Mb.

Next use extendfs to update filsystem size:

extendfs -F vxfs /dev/vg00/rlvol9.

If your filesystem is of OnlineJFS kind (swlist -l product | grep JFS) you can give up on mount/umount phase and run:

fsadm -F vxfs -b .

which one will be more secure, should i stop the database?

You can extend the logicalo volume and filesystem without stopping Oracle since you have Online JFS installed. As with any major change to a directory, you should always backup the files, then extend the filesystem. NOTE: it appears that everything has been dumped into the /opt/oracle directory, not a good choice at all. /opt is the storage location for the application files, but data files should reside on separate volumes, preferaably on different disks and I/O channels. A standard Oracle install would only need a few hundred megs in /opt. If indeed /opt/oracle supposedly contains only the application programs, analyze the directories with:

du -kx /opt/oracle | sort -rn | head -20

You may discover a big mistake in one of the /opt/oracle directories and not need additional space.

then plz tell me the step by step command which i need to use.

i need to extend this file system by 4Gb

Hi,
The procedure is allready told earlier just put the required space to be extended to in place.

Preperation -

Atleast 1000 Free PE should be there in vg00 for extending this file system by 4GB (1000PEs of 4MB each).Also you should first back up this file system atleast.


1. Stop Oracle
2. #umount /opt/oracle
3. #lvextend -L 20000 /dev/vg00/lvol9
4. #extendfs -F vxfs /dev/vg00/rlvol9
5. #mount /opt/oracle
6. #bdf (To confirm the successful completion)
7. Start and check application.(Oracle)

Since you have OnlineJFS, there is no need to unmount, so the steps are:

lvextend - to enlarge the LV
fsadm -b newsize - to increase the file system

I am not too much famliar with online JFS.
Does it mean that I have online JFS and can i extend this file system size without unmounting?

If yes, should i need to run only these two commands--
#lvextend -L 20000 /dev/vg00/lvol9
#fsadm -F vxfs -b 20000000 /opt/oracle

No more command is required?
Right now I am not in a situation to take the backup , is it secure?

does we have to put the files system size in KB while using fsadm?

Hi,

No, the size defined should be sector by default allthough you can define same in MBs also by giving M at the end of value. The value calculated by you is not correct in KBs as well and it should be

20*1024 = 20480 And command then shall look like

#lvextend -L 20480 /dev/vg00/lvol9
#fsadm -F vxfs -b 20480M /opt/oracle
