Smbnull or nobody

When I install CIFS (smaba) on HP, where can we set or how do we know that the default user is smbnull ?

Re: Smbnull or nobody

The default guest user is nodbody. If you want to use smbnull, then add the following to your smb.conf file.

guest account = smbnull

This avoids some minor problems caused by the nobody acct having negative a uid/gid.

Hi

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/netcom/index.html#HP%20CIFS

Then

Chapter 5 71
username=name Username sent to server. By default, the HP CIFS
Client accesses the server under the same user name
as the login name of the user. If you have a different
Commandline Utilities
mount_cifs, umount_cifs
user name at the server, you may use this option to set
that name. It is ignored if you are already logged in at
the server.

Re: Smbnull or nobody

Hi and welcome to the forums,

The install scripts for CIFS will create the default CIFS user as smbnull. If you wish to change this, then you'll need to create a user on the system (eg using SAM or useradd) then edit the smb.conf to set "guest account = whatever_you_chose" this can be set on a share by share basis.

There's further documentation on this in the smb.conf man page, also in the O'Reilly Using Samba book - a copy of which is available on your CIFS server, point your browser at http://yourservername:901

Hi,

Add the following line to your global section of the smb.conf file.

guest account = smbnull

Re: Smbnull or nobody

A standard CIFS/9000 install does set up a guest user called smbbull on the system.

smbnull:*:101:101:DO NOT USE OR DELETE - needed by Samba:/home/smbnull:/sbin/sh

It can be used as the guest account with the config changes noted earlier.

/sbin/init.d/samba stop
/sbin/init.d/samba start

is necessary.

Even if you don't use it as a guest account, you should not delete the account. I don't use it and the warning is obvious, leave it alone.
