socket/pipe file permissions

I'm working on a system that has an unusual number of socket and (a few) pipe files, and am looking for documentation on the significance of permissions for these files in hp-ux (10 & 11.)

I seem to recall(?) that in the case of BSD for example, socket file permission is basically ignored (like symbolic links), while in Linux it's not... or something to that effect. Basically I'm wondering if there is any significance to these files having 777 permissions.
