Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Cheryl, (not attacking you, just the people that came up with this silly idea)

WHY? It redirects us to a funky url anyways: http://h20293.www2.hp.com/ instead of the old http://www.software.hp.com.

Do I bookmark this or will it change later.

Changes like this are irrating, because links (bookmarks included) to things like BIND 9.2 are screwed:

http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=BIND9.2

will produce:
Not Found

The requested URL /cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl was not found on this server.
Apache/2.0.53 HP-UX_Apache-based_Web_Server (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.53 OpenSSL/0.9.7e DAV/2 Server at www.software.hp.com Port 80

IMO it appears there wasn't a lot of thought put into it!

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Of course it would help if they had made the link changes WITHIN HP so we don't get error messages like:

Not Found

The requested URL /cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl was not found on this server.
Apache/2.0.53 HP-UX_Apache-based_Web_Server (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.53 OpenSSL/0.9.7e DAV/2 Server at www.software.hp.com Port 80

by clicking on the link:
http://www.software.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/displayProductInfo.pl?productNumber=PERL

from the search at:
http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/srch/srch_SearchResut_IDX/1,1694,,00.html?qtext=perl&criteria=0&col=&lk=1&rf=0&fld=3&nh=10&fdt=in&fin=an&amo=&ady=&ayr=&bmo=&bdy=&byr=&st=1&qt=%2Bperl&topic=&qtextbox

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

I would note that this change invalidates thousands of peoples itrc posts with software links.

Beyond that, functionally I see little difference other than the back end server seems a little faster.

I know HP is trying to improve things and I'm grateful for that.

software.hp.com had become so popular and things were just working fine. What could have prompted for this change ?
I hope itrc remains itrc.hp.com

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Cheryl,

There seems to be a real problem here: the page http://software.hp.com works, it does not redirect you to another site (go/softwaredepot), and ALL LINKS in that page are BROKEN!
Not good, is it going to fix ASAP?

Hi,

OK, I just tried it again and got redirected to the new URL. That was the minimum to be done!

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

I really can't see the logic behind this, either. Ignoring the bookmarks that people may have saved, there are links all over docs.hp.com to software.hp.com which should be updated before this change is made. Surely it is technically possible to make a backend change to improve performance and yet retain the memorable link?

I can remember 'software.hp.com'; it is much harder to remember, and type, 'www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot'.

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Good day, dear Cheryl.
Some good points, some bad points.
Giving customers such a short note is very demanding on the abilities of the customers.
I had to try several times, before i got to the right page. I would not consider myself as a non-IT person.
Sample is looking for jetdirect printer install software for HP-UX. Where can i find it on that page ? Printing and Imaging ?
Pls try to find a solution, that suits to the usually excellent status of HP ideas.
Thanks for your time

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Besides if it breaks the links to previously linked pieces of software, I have no problem with it.

I've remembered www.hp.com/go/java for years. I could see using the same convention for a lot of different products/sites.

www.hp.com/go/itrc
www.hp.com/go/hpux11
www.hp.com/go/msl
www.hp.com/go/eva
...

If it was a meaningful keyword I wouldn't have any issues to it.

Well...I hope they maintain the old URL with atleast a redirect to the new one....

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Looks like I will have to get on the soapbox too...

All links are broken! Links from posts on forums, links from the ITRC, etc are all broken. What is more disturbing to me is that the links inside the SoftwareDepot itself are broken! It looks like all "Information" related links do not work. This is not a small problem for me, especially since I am looking for something today. :)

Cheryl, is there someone I can contact? I would like to talk to someone.

Thanks

Once I got off my soapbox, I got myself in touch with someone on the SoftwareDepot side. They will fix their internal links, but someone still needs to fix things like the ITRC...

I've just received word that all the old links will now automatically redirect to the corresponging place on the new server.

So now 'All is as it was...'

I've tried a couple of mine and it works.

Cheryl Griffin-

please mention to NornaD. that we need a "dependable" site.. yes, she did mention to me that this was in the works 2 yrs ago..
maybe the go/* will provide the linkage herein.. believe me, I'm only trying to help help.. I'm aligned w/ the Forum now.. so why don't you give us the LIST.

LIST of go/*

http://www.hp.com/go

yea, "no" index.htm, no index.html..

sorry for the push back here, but there was the devresource.hp.com, then there was change, then again..

we must point to one index, and that is:

http://www.hp.com/go

where this site is "stable" w/ a list of all the current lists:

go/java
go/ha
go/software /* what ever ticks */
go/csa
go/books
go/openview

please, give Nora D. the feedback push herein.. we are tired of the name changes, and want one place to shop..

thanks for you help here - long live the HP-UX Forum.

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

if this was in any kind related to performance issues (like the itrc has imo), I'd be pleased to point HP at their own products, namely the SA8220 and SA9200 load balancers and traffic directors.

I've got a few of these of ebay as they're great toys for me, and I am very positive HP could both easily resolve any (non-management) issue with these, both regarding performance and link consistency.

No, I could not not resist posting that.
yesterday I stood at the edge. Today I'm one step ahead.

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

It's stated above that old links should now be working, but that's not what I'm currently seeing. That could be a temporary server problem, however.

For http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=SYSFAULTMGMT , for example, I get a timeout and the message:

Failure of server APACHE bridge:

No backend server available for connection: timed out after 10 seconds.

Re: software.hp.com is moving! see http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot

Thanks to all for the responses here. We've received a number of support calls over the migration of support.hp.com and it is all along the lines of discussion here.

I do not have an internal contact for software.hp.com although I am pursuing that at this time.

If you have any concerns you would like to report directly, please submit it using the "contact hp" link to the left of most hp sites, including http://software.hp.com Select email Questions & Feedback.

It is the most direct way to contact the appropriate team who can respond to your needs.
