Some Suggestion on server Spec

Guru's ,
Need some advice on server requirement. My boss this morning ( out of blue sky) asked me to give him a server spec which :

1) can handle for 30 developer to develop code .
2) can handle for 30 developer to do a testing exhaustively.
3) can handle a O/S revolution for another 5 years.
4) most importantly cost reasonable.

I propose a two machine sharing a disk storage. Now he need asked a machine spec :- memory size, cpu speed , which HP class and disk storage.

If anybody have a same environment , appreciate if you could share.

FYI - we are a software house.

Currently we have a few HP which the newest is L class machine,360MHZ,512MB for memory ...(how embrassing !!!).

Re: Some Suggestion on server Spec

I know you use Oracle.

We barely stress an L class rp5450 with 2 GB of RAM with our development staff(around 10)

The OS I'd recommend would be 11i, its solid and stable. 11i v2 for Itanium is a little new.

I think you could pick up such a box with fiber dual connection for between $25K and $30K

If you think PA-RISC is going away you can get the equivalent Itanium box and go with 11i v2.

Need more detail?

Re: Some Suggestion on server Spec

Our production server is N-Class PA-RISC connected to SAN XP128

Our developers/testers work on rp5470 2x PA-RISC , 4Gb RAM (oracle databaseSSSS), connected to SAN.

same OS HPUX11.0 on both servers.
We try to be as close as possible, of course there is some cost for that too !

Re: Some Suggestion on server Spec

mB,

I'll second SEP's contribution. We have 20 developers on an L2000 with 2 440 Mhz processors and 2GB of memory accessing a FC60 disk array. They don't even begin to stress it - I could *easily* put 20 more developers on it.

Re: Some Suggestion on server Spec

I think I will add my own warped view to this. There is DANGER in making your test box a fast box. The problem is that if you have a fast box, fast i/o, fast network, lots of memory and LOUSY algorithms, your software might appear to be fast in small test sets but die like a dog in production environments. On the other hand, if your developers are able to make their code run well on a dog it will fly on a fast production box.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Some Suggestion on server Spec

I thought i would add my 2peneth, i have 30+ developers doing what they do?.
they are developing on a D 390 2x 240mhx processors, they dont even stress the processors but absolutly nail the memory, i don't know what your guys are developing, but the guys here are doing some pretty intense work and i have had at one stage 9 databases running on the dev machine, although the memory did start to be a problem.
so after all this gassing i think that the thing to ask is what are they doing and what resource is going to be hit the most.
we also use oracle on 11.00 32bit.
although i have a d390 running ux 11i v1 64 bit no problem.

andy
ps i have two hass arrays on that box, the production box that the development is for is a n4000 6 way.
