Then I downloaded SSH from here:

As my host does not have bzip2, then I downloaded it as well. I run bzip2 it complained:

Can any one direct me a clear way to set up SSH service in my old HP-UX 11.00?

The 11.11 version of SSH will NOT run on 11.0.

Go here:

And look in the 11.0 section. You will see OpenSSH available for download there.

I downloaded openssh-5.1p1-11.00.sd.bz from where you directed, and downloaded bzip2-1.0.2-pa2.0 as well. I renamed it to bzip2, when I run bzip2, it complained the hardware incompatible.

Any further help?

What kind of hardware do you have?

What does the 'model' command return?

The version of 'bzip' you downloaded was built for a PA-RISC 2.0 architecture server.

It is possible you have a PA-RISC 1.1 server. Try downloading the version of bzip listed in the 10.20 category and see if that will work.

I used bzip2-1.0.2-pa1.1 ( for 10.20 ) on 11.00, it seemed OK. Then I tried installation but failed.

Look at these steps:

1:)
./bzip2-1.0.2-pa1.1 -d openssh-5.1p1-11.00.sd.bz
( The above cmd OK, I got openssh-5.1p1-11.00.sd )

2:)
swinstall -s ./openssh-5.1p1-11.00.sd

( I got:
a:) Checking CD-ROM ....
b:)
Could not contact host "./openssh-5.1p1-11.00.sd". Make sure the â â
â â â â â â hostname is correct.

3:)

Is it PAR-RISC 1.1 or 2.0, I do not know.

Check first with this thread to resolve the host

restart with swagentd -r, you swagent daemon
and another idea, assuming you openssh depot is in /tmp, try swinstall -s /tmp/openssh.xxx
Hope it helps to install openssh.

Address: 10.2.240.31

hosts file entries are fine.

2:)
/etc/nsswitch.conf gave me this:
hosts: files nis dns

4:) file /etc/rc.config.d/netconf has this entry:
HOSTNAME=awagshp

3:) I did this:
awagshp 65 [/etc] #/usr/sbin/swagentd -r
awagshp 66 [/etc] #

4:) I still got these:

Apparently, you need to install OpenSSL
before you can install OpenSSH.

FYI, I just uploaded OpenSSL-0.9.8k + OpenSSH-5.2p1
Including the versions for HP-UX 10.20, which should be useable for 11.00 with PA7xxx CPU

The 11.00 builds are 32bit builds for PA-RISC2.0, so they won't run on your system.

Well, this day I had to build those two for 9 systems anyway, so one more configuration could be added.

I hope I did it right though, because I used a different intermediate folder in order not to conflict with the build system itself, which is still a production box.

And HP-UX is sooooooo much easier and faster to do than those AIX machines! We hates those we hates those.

BTW, that distro also includes a libz-1.2.3.sl (and a symlink to it) as I didn't have a PA-1.1 version handy.

It seemed that the installation & execution was OK at this stage ( great leap ) except the installation log file was a problem, hopefully this is not a problem at all.

Doesn't this stuff come with documentation?

Run the program (sshd)? I know nothing, but
I'd assume that the installation procedure
left a control script in /sbin/init.d (or
somewhere) with a link to it in /sbin/rc?.d
(or somewhere), and so it should get started
when you boot the system, or when you run the
control script manually:

/sbin/init.d/<script_name> start

There are probably a bunch of configuration
files which may need some adjustment, too,
and some key files to create.

There is another option. Later versions of 11.00 Core OS and application CD's might have a fully working version of ssh in depot format for 11.00.

If you have a software contract on another system, HP support might be convinced to open up access to their FTP archives.

you're going to need to configure and start the sshd on the destination server. If I recall, the config files are found in /etc/ssh or /opt/etc/ssh. You may have to write a start up script as well.

If you don't already have a random number software installed, you may need to add something like PRNGD as well...

After the installation, I checked a few directories referenced in this thread & found no names as "*ssh*", used "ps -ef|grep ssh" gave me nothing else.

Can I have some clear instruction on where the ssh server was installed & how to make it work?

To us non-psychics, "a few directories" is
not very informative. Your "Connection
Refused" complaint already told us that the
sshd was not running, so the "ps" result is
not amazing.

Knowing nothing, I'd expect that a home-made
OpenXXX kit would get put into
/opt/ or /usr/local/.
How hard have you looked? No one said
anything during "the installation"? There's
no documentation?

On an 11.11 system, HP's things seem to go
into /usr/sbin, /usr/bin, /opt/ssh/etc, and
so on, and there are "man" pages for the
programs.
