Hi all,
Hope somebody can help.
We have a user connecting to our HP server on a specific IP address. His connection is delayed for many minutes and eventually he does get a login prompt. Strangely other PC's on the same subnet connect ok. If I do a traceroute to my IP address from the server all is fine. If I do a traceroute to his IP address it just hangs. There are no firewalls involved and its not his PC. The reason being if he sets his IP address to mine it works fine. Even if I sit on the same subnet I can ping his IP address but not traceroute to it yet I can to my IP address. Just to confirm my IP address is on the same Subnet as his and we have the same mask.
Anyone got any ideas.

Solution
Maybe, another device on the network has his ip?
Maybe, his nic is not set to the correct duplex mode?

Re: strange network issue
I would attack your problem thusly: Turn his PC off and see if you can still reach his IP address. This will eliminate duplicate IP addresses as the culprit. Look very carefully at his IP address and make sure that you are not using the network address or the broadcast address for this subnet as an IP address. I'm betting that you have a duplicate IP address on a seldom used device on this network (an old printer perhaps?).
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: strange network issue
I would look at couple of things here.
1. If you are not using the hosts file on your PC, then there could be some problem with the DNS. May be the cache table has some old DNS entries and this needs to be re flushed. So, re boot the PC and see if it helps.
2. If you have some body on the remote site, let them check the DNS / /etc/resolv.conf file . If you are not using DNS, try moving the /etc/resolv.conf file and see if you can connect.
3. Check with your n/w team to make sure that the n/w cards are in sync with the duplex used on the server and the n/w switch.
