Strange Problem with wu-ftpd 2.6.1

Hi everyone,

I am writing to check into a very strange problem I am encountering with wu-ftp. I had been running a HP installed binary (from HP porting and archiving centre) of wu-ftpd successfully for about 3 months.

Last week I installed webalizer and apache (latest stable from HP Software Depot). Everything worked like dynamite for about a week. On Friday I tried to telnet to the server and noticed an abnormally long lag before my login prompt returned. I then tried to ftp to the box and couldn't connect at all. I endured a five minute wait to reconnect via telnet and discovered that the box seemed to have lost it's identity!!! An swlist failed with a "couldn't connect to hostname, check /etc/hosts" message.

uname -n returned the proper hostname and /etc/hosts was in proper order. I then checked /etc/rc.config.d/netconf an it to was set up correctly. I took a chance and created a nsswitch.conf file with the line hosts = files. This server is in our DMZ so is not relying on DNS to do name resolution. There was no reason for this file to be configured. As soon as I did that telnet immediately began working properly, as did swlist, swremove, swinstall.

However ftp is still not connecting. I changed inetd.conf to load the "out of box" ftpd that ships with HP-UX and ftp connectivity was restored. Everytime I switch back to wu I lose the service again!!! I am baffled as to what is going on here. If anyone has info it would be greatly appreciated.
I say unmount and newfs for a bit...It's the only way to be sure ; )

Don't worry about a reply, I figured it out. The network guys changed a rule on the firewall. I simply changed the resolv.conf to resolv.conf.old and everything snapped backinto place!!!!

What a way to do business!!!!

Thanx anyhow,
smitty

Re: Strange Problem with wu-ftpd 2.6.1

glad to hear that everything was OK in the end. one nit - stuff from the "HP porting and archive center" (the liverpool archive) is not really "from HP" stuff from www.software.hp.com though is indeed from HP.
