Survey
This time time I am not going to ask what your Salary is .. :-)) ... But, tell me what do you think is a decent salary for the Unix Admins in the market depending on the years of experience they have.
Mike "Where are you" Fisher??? We are waiting for your responses.

Re: Survey
It's too dependant on where you live. There's no way to compare. Minimal, entry level salaries here in the US would be much higher than an experienced person might make where you are.

Re: Survey
A lot of it is not just down to experience but also location that affects the wage but thats the rule of thumb that i use.

Re: Survey
1. The experience of the person (in years and variety of products)
2. The technical nature of the role which they are undertaking (Basic Admin, or Advanced Troubleshooting or Architecture Design)
3. The economic climate of the time, including the scarcity of the skillset.

Re: Survey
At first a CCNA/CCNP or a MCSE could command a realy good wage initially but the the market became flooded with people with the same skill sets and it drove the wages right down.
Tis the old supply and demand chestnut!

Re: Survey
as for the salary...
location, cost of living (in that area), general trend in the market, companies financial status, demand for the skill, level of skill required, possibly age, actual job function, all take part in determining salary... oh yeah... personality.... personality goes a long way (pulp fiction)

Re: Survey
35K - 55K Junior Unix Admin
45K - 70K Intermediate Unix Admin
70K - 100K Senior Unix Admin
But I think that that applies to US $.
It depends, also, as stated, on a bunch of factors:
geographical: New York City pays more than Iowa.
industry: Financial pays more than university. Merrill Lynch pays more than the university of cincinnati.
employer: PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting pays more than university of Cincinatti.
Size: Large corporations with 100 servers pay more than small companies with 5 servers.
Also, you can increase your income by being a contractor rather than a company employee. But you sacrifice security in hard times (like now). (Security is a whole other subject - the reality or illusion thereof.)
A further factor to consider is specialization: It used to be that the UNIX System Admin did all jobs pertaining to administration of a system. Now there are specialists:
Performance Management Specialists.
Storage Administrators.
SAN Administrators.
Backup Administrators.
They often pay more.
Also, check ads on NetTemps and Monstor. They often have prices in them (although recruiters lie to you sometimes.)

Re: Survey
Junior 15-25K
Inter 25-45k
Senior 35-70k
All the rates are location dependant with the City of London paying the most.
Contractor rates vary from location with the average at ??28 per hour dependant on experience.

Re: Survey
I would define Junior/Intermediate/Senior something like this:
0 to 7 years - Junior Unix Admin
4 to 10 years - Intermediate Unix Admin
more than 8 years - Senior Unix Admin
But in each of these cases it really depends on proficiency in a lot of areas - that's why there are overlaps.

I also exit will depend on the type of systems you service. The other thing I noticed (& I dont mean to be an intellectual snob here) only about 50% of people have a degree. (probably because a degree in lack of sleep, trying to persuade your boss installing patches is a good idea.. donsn't exist)
