Re: SYSLOG Configration

How does the cisco router do its current logs?

If the cisco server has an smtp server it can send messages by email to the HP server.

I'm not sure that syslog.conf can be configured to accept log messages that kind of device.

If the cisco router has an nfs client or a samba/cifs client it can mount an nfs or samba share and write messages there.

Re: SYSLOG Configration

I believe there should be a configuration item on the Cisco device that is something like log server or syslog server. You should be able to just specify the IP address of your HP-UX server in that item.

We have log messages from onne of our Cisco Pix firewalls logging to an HP-UX server with no problems.

Re: SYSLOG Configration

To define a syslog server, you add

logging ip_address

into your router config, where ip_address is the address of your server

All messages from the router will default to syslog.log

If you wish to set these messages to an alternate log eg: /var/adm/syslog/router.log

add the line below to /etc/syslog.conf
(on cisco equipment, router messages seem to default to the local7 variable for syslog)

local7.* /var/adm/syslog/router.log

then restart syslogd
